Grass Shadows - INI tweaks

Post » Sat May 19, 2012 8:09 am

I've noticed that shadows aren't cast on grass, and this is literally the last graphical oddity that is bugging me.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v298/SovaLopivia/ScreenShot2.jpg - notice the bushes outside of the shadow from the mill are the same as the bushes within the shadow.

I've looked through http://donotargue.com/cfg-makers/skyrim/ and saw the bShadowsOnGrass bDrawShaderGrassand bGrassPointLighting options, however enabling these (setting to =1) doesn't seem to do the trick.

Does anyone else experience this? or know a way to enable shadows on grass?

Literally tryign to fix this myself now but having the same results as you - the ini tweaks here mentioned seem to have worked for e.g. Fallout 3 but don't work for Skyrim.

perhaps these options are currently unimplemented and will be enabled with a patch?
does anyone have grass which shadows are cast on to without using the nvidia ambient occlusion tweak.

Works for me. Set it in my Skyrim.ini and not SkyrimPrefs.ini. Worked the first time I did it, so not entirely sure why you'd be having issues.

Ah I tried fiddling with prefs.ini since most of the shadow stuff is in there, which particular command(s) did you have enabled?

That looks more like applied Nvidia SSAO. I've tried getting grass shadows using the 3 mentioned commands under display and general of the skyrimprefs and skyrim ini's but it doesn't work.

Yep, those are definitely SSAO shadows, not what you're looking for. I'm having the same issue (if it is an issue that is, not sure), though there is some grass-like vegetation that does receive shadows but just not the ordinary grass. I'm not sure if it's always been like this, I must've never noticed before. Haven't been able to find a solution for this.

Another thing I noticed is that large mountains, like whatiksname peak doesn't really cast a shadow. I mean it does, but just not a shadow as large as it should.

It still doesn't work after putting all the variables i mentioned in all available .inis, I'm assuming its a currently unimplemented feature. Unless someone can demonstrate a screenshot which has a building or rock casting a shadow on foliage then I'm just going to have to give up and wait to see what future patches bring.
