Great PC games?

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 2:47 am

Can anyone recomend me some great PC games? I love RPGs and Strategy games. I have only recently got 'back' into playing PC games and I could use some recommendations. I have played mostly on consoles for the last 8-10 years. Been back on PC for 1 year.

I have Heroes of Might and Magic 3-6.

Witcher 1 & 2.

Morrowind-Skyrim.

Fallout 3 and New Vegas.

Most of the Total War series. (have not played them much, got them on a big sale)

I have Civilization 3-5. Played the first one as well.

I have played a lot of games for PC that are old but I enjoyed them very much. Might and Magic 6-7. Age of Empires 1 & 2. Age of Mythology. HOMM 1 & 2.

I have played Dragon age and Mass Effect on consoles already. Also a number of other games.

So given these games I was wondering if people have any recommendations that they feel would suit me.

Help?

Everyone who likes the Elder Scrolls series should play Baldur's Gate. Neverwinter Nights and Planescape Torment are of a similar vein.

Older games right? Are they compatible with current systems?

Would love to try them.

They are. You can pick them up from http://www.gog.com/ for relatively cheap.

I also suggest Team Fortress 2 for some silly, mindless and free action.

Fallout 1 and 2 - No need for explanation other then its one of the RPG if we are talking about the RPG of the past.

Daggerfall if one want try out the Elder Scoll of the past. Its free and here the link for that: http://theelderscrolls.wiwiland.net/?title=Daggerfall_:_DaggerfallSetup_EN.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wizardry_8 if ya into old-school dungeon crawling team based RPG with modern graphic.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diablo_2 for some awesome clickfest RPG. Mod like Median XL or Eastern Sun for overhaul mod of Diablo 2.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deus_ex for the best overall cyberpunk/action rpg. Pick up the http://thenamelessmod.com/editors_choice/ after playing Deus Ex 4 or 5 time as it is its own game.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neverwinter_Nights and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neverwinter_Nights_2 for an RPG based on Dungeons & Dragons / Forgotten Realms. If ya get Neverwinter Nights 2, get the expansion, Mask of the Betrayer; overall decent theme, choice and consequences, and decent character.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arcanum:_Of_Steamworks_and_Magick_Obscura - Same guy that made Fallout 1 made this; think of it as DnD/steampunk version of Fallout.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_Knights_of_the_Old_Republic 1 and 2 - RPG of Star Wars; great story many choices here and there.

Strategy-wise, there always the Starcraft and the Warcraft series.

The original Fallout's have a strategy feel to them with thier turn based combat and are also available from the website I linked. I hear Starcraft 2 is also pretty amazing, and new!

I'm also going to recomend a few of my personal favorite titles to come out recently - Battlefield 3, Batman: Arkham Asylum (As well as Arkham City), Deus Ex: Human Revolution, RAGE, Metro 2033, Divinity 2: The Dragon Knight Saga, Darksiders and Amnesia: The Dark Descent (This one is a PC exclusive, IIRC. Play in the dark with headphones turned up.)

I'm also gonna throw in Half-Life 2 just in case you've never played it...

Wooo, more than I bargained for. Cannot wait for summer. I will probably have time to finish a few of these then. Thanks! Favoriting this page for future gaming suggestions.

I also have played a few of these. Star Wars KOTOR for instance.

Was actually looking into Dragon Knight Saga and RAGE but it just never happened for some reason. Probably lack of funds or school.

If you like the HoMM games then you'll probably be interested in the Age of Wonders games. Age of Wonders 2 has the best campaign but Shadow Magic has a lot more stuff in it. Also check out Galactic Civilizations 2.

RPG's I think have been covered so I'm going to focus on strategy. They are set up in the order of most to least RTS like.

Rise of Nations is my second favourite RTS ever. It is just a beautifully done game. (Age of Mythology is my favourite)
Company of Heroes is a very good RTS set in WW2 and has a fairly active online community, as far as I know.
Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War 2 is a squad based RTS game mixed with some RPG elements.
Galactic Civilizations 2 is from what I hear very similar to the Civilizations games and is also made by Sid Meier. It's a turn based strategy game set in space and a pretty addictive game.

Europa Universalis 3.

Just make sure to have all expansions and the latest patch. Hundreds of hours of believable worlds right there.

Try out the Gothics..Gothic 2 with the expansion is one of the best open-world RPG's ever..providing you can get past the graphics. It's also like ten bucks or something on Gog.com.

Gothic 3 is quite good with the community patch, but still not nearly as good as 2.

Also Mount and Blade, or Mount and Blade Warband are fun, interesting games that have a TON of replay value...if you like twitchy, medieval warfare fighting!

I'll second this recommendation. Age of Wonders is an excellent choice for anyone who enjoyed the HOMM series. Disciples 2 is another similar game that I would definately recommend. Also, since you liked the Civ games you should definately check out Alpha Centauri if you haven't played it. The King's Bounty remakes are also quite good, although they're more tactical games than strategy games. You could also take a look at Spellforce, as it's a nice cross of RPG and RTS.

Moving into RPGs, pretty much all of the Infinity Engine games are recommended, as long as you don't have an aversion to AD&D (Baldur's Gate 1&2, Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale 1&2). Temple of Elemental Evil is also recommended if you find you enjoy the D&D ruleset and want a game that emphasizes the more tactical elements of it. And I'd be remiss if I didn't recommend Arcanum while talking about isometric RPGs. Moving forward a few years, the Gothic series is highly recommended as alongside TES it's one of the most noteable open-world series out there. Gothic 1&2 show their age, but still remain excellent games; Gothic 3 is a bit newer and a good game once the community patch is applied, but doesn't quite rise to the level of the first two; and Risen, which is fairly recent, is a Gothic game in all but name and brings back a lot of kind of experience found in the first two games (just don't ask about Gothic 4... we don't speak of that). Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines is another excellent RPG that should definately be played if you get a chance. Same goes for Deus Ex. A few other fairly recent releases that should also be mentioned are Divinity 2: The Dragon Knight Saga (a sequel to Divine Divinity, and older game but also very good), and Drakensang: The River of Time. Neverwinter Nights 2 (particularly the Mask of the Betrayer expansion) is also quite good if you're looking for a more recent D&D based game (and the original NWN is also worth picking up, particularly for the many excellent user-made modules available for it).

And I'm sure others will continue to fill in many that I've left out. I'm afraid you're now facing a long list of excellent games that will take a ridiculous amount of time to get through.

This! You can play as virtually every nation that existed between 1399 and 1820. And they all feel different, having different tech groups, technologies, religions and government types that all affect how the game plays out.

It's fun leading a weak nation to glory as well, changing history. I led Vietnam on a conquest of Siberia, Australia and New Zealand.

Final Fantasy VIII. That is, if you don't mind the graphics and are just looking for a good story. I have no idea where to get this anymore though.

Age of Mythology will always be my favorite RTS game, simply because of it's setting.

deus ex 1 & system shock 2. the only games youll ever need. first person shooter/roleplaying game hybrids. but you can play them as stealth games too if you dont like shooting much.

arx fatalis and vampire the masquerade: bloodlines once you have completed the other 2.

Apart from a fantasy setting, these games have next to nothing in common with TES. They are great games though (except NWN, that was meh).

If you don't mind the age of the games, Panzer General and Steel Panthers make for some excellent turn based strategy in WWII fashion.

Then there's Dungeon Keeper and Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. For more strategy gaming.

The usual suspects (Fallout 1-2, Planescape: Torment, Arcanum, ToEE) have already been mentioned, but I didn't see Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, so there's one more RPG.
