Game still isn't opening up after trying everything. It still just disappears after I click play, with no error message. After waiting on hold for half an hour, I finally get a person. They tell me the only problem is my driver is out of date (based of the directX diagnosis I sent them), and it'll run fine after that. They wouldn't wait on the line for 2 minutes while I installed the updated driver to tell them that it didn't work... Thanks Bethesda, great work.

What exactly is your problem? If the game isn't starting up, you can try running the game as administrator or in compatibility mode. You should also verify the validity of you game cache among other things. Also, if you are using Nvidia, make sure you are using the latest beta driver. There really isn't much anyone can do and I am just posting things that have been said a million times before. I know reformatting the Hard Drive is time consuming and should be a last resort, but it at least gives us the ability to rule everything out and start from scratch.

PS: You should also try downloading a program called Gboost. All it does is turn off all unnecessary processes in the background. It might sound stupid, but its just something to check.

hey try changing your sound settings down to the default 24000Hz i had the same problem and somebody else posted about it here on the forums i tried the idea and i can confirm it works ive played about 7 hrs of the game now give it a try it has something to do with the soundcard or something im not sure why you cant have it higher then 24000Hz

Given how CPU dependent this game is, this might be your problem: "Processor: Intel? Core? i7 CPU Q 720 @ 1.60GHz (8 CPUs), ~1.6GHz"

Turn off "SpeedStep" in your bios, which should force your CPU back to full speed of 2.66ghz.

Then re-run the laucher and click "default" to detect your cpu speed properly.

Also try turning OFF AA and reduce or turn OFF shadows (FXAA should be ok)

Just adding some correct information.
Some people have had issues when their sound devices were set higher than 44100Hz. The default on my computer 48000Hz (24-bit), but many people had theirs set to 96000Hz or 192000Hz. I believe this only produced audio static.

@Tweakerr: Your computer looks fine. That mobile CPU may be a bit of the weak side (although it is quite fast for laptops), but certainly wouldn't prevent you from running the game. Nevermind its Speedstep" Your problem could be a Windows access rights related issue.

Where is Steam installed on your computer? Is it in the Program Files directory?

If your game doesn't open at all you should:

1) Install latest AMD drivers (even Beta if newest). nVidia released a new driver specific for Skyrim, AMD might have as well.
2) Use Steam to "Verify Game Cache" as this will inspect game files for corruption or errors and redownload those that need replaced.
3) Try disabling your Anti-Virus software or adding Skyrim as an "exception". Sometimes A/V programs erroneously suspect Game EXE's as Viruses and silently shut down the program before it begins to run. This recently happened with The Witcher 2, and also affected Battlefield 3 at launch. If you go into your A/V programs "Quarantine" or "Chest" look to see if the Skyrim executable is listed. If it is, then your A/V program is blocking it from running.

It isn't a problem with steam. I can run Portal 2, all my Call of Duty games, Team Fortress, etc. all fine. It's only Fallout and Skyrim that do this...

Every game calls functions differently. Bethesda games are more prone to issues with reduced access rights. Could you please answer my question? Otherwise I cannot help you.

I have the exact same laptop, setting the sound to 44100hz fixed the menu crash,,, but I can't get past the first encounter with the dragon hoho. Anyway good luck
