Green Darkness & Weird Tear on Main Menu

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 6:41 am

Not a huge issue, but one thing I've noticed is that since the game unlocked Tuesday at Midnight, darkened areas are shown in a shade of green instead of, you know, black as darkness usually is. If you've played the previous id Tech games like Doom 3, Quake 4 and ETQW, you know that the engine should get such areas down right.

Also, a minor but noticeable issue I have is that when the game loads into the main menu, there will be this huge tear a couple of inches thick across the screen, sitting just above the New Game option. It flickers for a while then disappear, then reappear and repeat until I start the game. It isn't anywhere in sight in the actual game, but like the darkness issue above, it's more of a nuisance then a performance issue.

If anyone knows what I can do to get rid of these problems, I'll be all for it.

Oh, I suppose some specs are in order. They are:

Intel Core i7 2630QM 2.0GHz
6GB RAM
1.5GB nVidia GeForce GTX 460M with 285.38 drivers
Windows 7 Home Premium

I've read many people have the same problem.

Honestly, I thought this iwas INTENDED (to be green), yeah those textures look like really, REALLY bad. I'm stuck at work so I can't do anything... but I heard someone mention something about changing Gamma.. could try that - otherwise I'm in your same boat, the green looks not only awful, but really out-of-place.

I'm at work, too, but what I've done so far is lowered the gamma a bit (the logo just shows as per what the options say), updated my GPU drivers to 285.38 and made sure GPU Transcode is enabled. Hopefully this will look a bit better with all of this done.

Also I noticed that some other dark area have a reddish glow instead of green. Still looks terrible.

Was worried it was something on my end too. Looks hideous, especially bad in that first bandit hideout you go too (Ghosts?). I figured it was meant to be shadows but something was screwing up, fiddled with the couple options in the menu but nothing seemed to work.

Most places that aren't in direct light seem off. Not as bad as the green spaces but they don't look right, even taking into account the bad textures.

Specs -

Intel 2600k 4.3ghz
Nvidia GTX 570 with newest drivers
8 gigs of ram
Windows 7

I have yet to play this, but I noticed the green shadows in most of the prerelease footage. I too was worried I has something set up wrong. It's clearly the game, not our systems.

Played some more yesterday, after updating to the 285.38 drivers. While the tearing seems to have disappeared (forcing VSync through the nVidia CP seems to work), the darkness is still colored weirdly. The new thing I've noticed, though, is that it's not just green anymore. Some areas changed color, like the Shrouded Bunker has its darkened areas shaded in red, while the Dead City has its darkened areas shaded in blue. Turning down the brightness didn't seem to fix this.

Ya the green is part of the post process we are trying to figure out how to disable. Other parts have purple, orange, and even blue tints because of this. I remember Carmack saying he preferred playing with these effects disabled we just need to figure out how to do it.

I would if I could, but we all know that just isn't possible at the moment...

Everyone is talking about the mega(low res)textures, but I definitely noticed the weird green darkness that you are mentioning. It's like the darkness is pixelated too. I swear I've seen this kind of thing before. Like it's using some kind of obsolete shading program to do the shadows. I swear I wouldn't be surprised if someone finds out their using some archaic shading program just to get it to work on consoles. Looks pretty bad. Hopefully there will be some fix for this.

I also have this green darkness issue. Its not there all the time but is consistent - so I never see it on the main map but always on the Ghost Hideout map.

I have a Core i7 and GTX 570. Tried the default graphics settings and a variety of configs but nothing changes this green shadowing. I have used the current WHQL drivers and the Battlefield betas.

Basically I want to know if this is "working as intended" or is some kind of bug. Screenshots to illustrate follow.

The first screen shot is the main map before you enter the ghost hideout - looks fine.

The second is just inside the hideout in a well lit area - looks fine.

Moving just out of the light shows green shadows.
