Grr, I hate encumbrance!

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 8:59 pm

So I've never been a fan of encumbrance in games, while it might certainly make sense from a realism stand point, for me, from a game play position it is just annoying. Bethesda makes it even more annoying in their games b/c they add tons of lootable items and a lot of times you don't know which things you might need later, some things you know you might need later you're forced to leave behind.

Anyway, I don't suppose there's a mod out to cut down on the weight value of items, particularly ingredients, I want all my ingredients/materials to weigh zero, I can deal with weight on weapons and what not but I don't like being bogged down by crafting supplies, it's just silly.

Thats it, though. In my opinion part of it is making a choice. Without choice the world is a boring place, which is why i disagreed on them removing classes.

It depends on how much realism Bethesda wants to the Skyrim game. I think they won't care about changing this system.

I am much more worried about the other major annoying bugs. I got stunned when someone here on the forum told Skyrim Does Not Have Hardware Mouse mov.

I am really worried about the "PC FUTURE" of this game, tought.

Hope you find a way do deal with the encumbrance! I can't never deal with a FPS-based mouse movement. It kills me. Really...

Encumbrance is part of making choices, no encumbrance and you can carry an unlimited number of health potions given you the clear advantage over the enemy, Bethesda would be strung up from the nearest pole had they given that option.

I think they've been pretty generous with the encumbrance actually. 300 is a whole lot. You can probably carry around multiple sets of heavy armor with that. If they had really gone for realism it would probably have been something like 150 instead.

I agree with this, my Bosmer is fully kitted out with plenty of room to spare.

At least you can still move while encumbered in Skyrim, when you became encumbered in Oblivion you were an unmoving statue.

I find no joy in making choices that have zero consequences. By definition, that is what micromanagement (a key feature of RPGs) is all about.

I wish we had a traveling companion that ran to the nearest towns and sold stuff for us.

My only problem with encombrance...and I believe in realism...is that you need gold to survive. And the easiest way is to loot, so it's very annoying to have alot of good gear and be so far from a buyer.

So, with no Strength attribute, how does encumbrance work? Does it stay at 300 the entire game?

without attributes ecnombrance makes no sense whaty-so-ever just because you have high endurance (health) does not mean you can carry a crap load of armour (or just because you can run fast [stamina] does not mean you can carry alot, which ever "attribute" it is taged on to)

Are you kidding me ? I was expecting an encumbrance of around 120 maybe at first. I actually feel 300 is a little bit too much for a level 1 character. Really as a TES fan I'm surprised anyone would want encumbrance gone.

I love when people blame Bethesda for not making a game specifically catered to their needs... It's called choice, people... go play Rage if you don't want to be hindered by things like having to make decisions.

Stamina, when you level up and pick stamina to upgrade you get +5 to your carry weight.

Once you buy a house you can store items. You can probably store items in the Companion's hall in Whiterun but who knows if the other companions will take your gear or the chest resets.

I really agree with this, classes made your character your character. Also encumbrance is so much higher in this game (from what I have seen) than in the other games.

For the few people that replied and apparently lack basic reading comprehension, no where in this thread did I blame Bethesda for anything, simply said I don't like encumbrance, that is not a thing exclusive to Bethesda. I also did not suggest they should change it or cater the game to me specifically, if you see that bit where I ask for a mod...that would let me tailor the game for me w/o hurting anyone. If you want to devoted fan rage over the way I want to play the game, do it elsewhere.

That seems to be the stock response to any sort of criticism of anything relating to the game.

In Skyrim, the perks are what is really going to make your character. In Oblivion, the only real consequences of selecting a class was what skills advanced your character and what skills advanced faster or slower. You could still grind every single skill to 100 and be no different from any other class that did the same.

In Skyrim, you have 50 perk points to allocate. You can still grind every skill to 100 (and by selecting guardian stones, select what skills advance faster or slower), but you are going to be far from being able to select every perk that is available to you. I player that focuses all his perks in Rogue skills is going to have significantly different strengths than a player that focuses all his perks in Warrior skills, even if both have every skill capped.
