Jo & Gstaff: What can we look forward to now that E3 is

Post » Sun Jun 17, 2012 5:59 pm

Title pretty much says it all, but..

Dear Community Leaders,

What can the ESO community look forward to in the coming months? Anything you guys can let slip? Now that E3 is over, what are the plans to keep the game hype alive? What's next for the world of The Elder Scrolls Online?

News on official forums opening?
Weekly reveals or updates? TOR did a great job of this leading to release.
Beta signups? Even if the actual Beta is a long ways away.

You have made it abundantly clear this game is not going to be a game for you. Why do you spend so much time here? My bigger question is, when they make the new forums, are you going to transfer over?

I hope they cancel this abomination. You want to see your chances of success at the MMO market? Look at TOR. . . and it's a FREAKING STAR WARS game! Elder Scrolls is a cool universe, but it can't hold a candle to the rabid fanbase of Star Wars. Now they're evaluating F2P options 6 months after release.

People are sick to death of the stupid holy trinity. I'm sick to death of zone lines, and groups, and raiding, and grinding, and hotbars, and cooldowns. Make an MMO without any of that.

How do you really feel about it? How selfish of you, to wish cancellation of a project just because you don't like it.

That's a joke right? I've been dreaming of a TES MMO for more than 10 years now. I genuinely care about this franchise more than any other IP that exists, and from my very informed point of view it is being cannibalized to create a DAOC sequel with the TES name.

Of course I will be there on the official forums, and I will bang the drum for them to make the changes that I, and many, many others have been asking for all over the internet, even if it is entirely in vain.

In the mean time I am designing and developing my own as-of-yet unannounced MMORPG (not just me, ha). I honestly thought that ESO would put our endeavors to shame, and effectively make our game redundant. In a bitter-sweet reveal, it is NOTHING like what I had hoped for, and what our game already is. This is why it is ludicrous to say the tech isn't able to do a lot of these things, or they can't be balanced, because we are doing just that. While I'm not going to give too many more details (though I've hinted at a few things) I can tell you from first-hand experience, that it isn't much more difficult than building a WoW-clone, it's just a different approach, different mind-set and above all a passion for pushing the genre forward.

Our MMO will likely be another niche game, since it has no branded IP to latch onto, and not much in the way of funding when compared to the hundreds of millions that ESO has at its disposal. We will have to cut corners in order to do what we want (we tend to work smarter as opposed to harder), but ESO does not have to cut nearly as many corners. They have almost 10x our devs and probably 30x our funding.

It disappoints me when I see developers who I look up to fall into this all-too-common +1 trap. "It's like GW2, but with 3 factions!" "It's like DAOC with TES lore!"

I guess the upside is my MMORPG is still original and will break new ground, but without a major IP and without a huge marketing budget, will anyone ever hear about us?

On topic, I'll be around when I'm not busy. And you can bet on me being in the beta for this game.

People aren't sick of the holy trinity. Millions of people purchased that game. It just had no reason to keep playing, for the most part.

Yes. They should cancel it. Because you said so. Because you pay their checks. Because you know how to design an MMO better than the industry professionals.

How bout instead of telling others to cancel their products and put your money where your mouth is and design your own MMO and show them up. Got a couple hundred million dollars lying around? If so, knock yourself out and show them up. We'll pass the time waiting for you to develop your uber MMO by playing TESO...

No offense but if you have to cut corners I doubt your game will be all that original in terms of features, or be balanced at all. But if it is anything like a better version of what ZOS is advertising I am interested. You also do not need a huge budget or tons of advertising for people to know about your game. Look at EVE. What other MMORPG projects have you and your team helped develop? I saw the same game you did at E3 with the behind the scenes pass and the press pass so I am not 100% sure on what you are being so negative about all the time. To each their own I guess.

If you DO in fact have a couple hundred million dollars lying around I have a game I'd like to pitch to you for investment.

Not sure how you can have a MMO without groups. Seems like you like single player games from what you describe. Maybe Dance Dance Revolution Online or something would fit your bill.

I;d LOVE to see the MMO succeed to the point where Zenimax was getting so much money in subscription fees that they pulled developers out of Bethesda Games Studios and put them into Zenimax Online Studios, why not? The Single-player games don't generate the subscription fees that the MMORPG's do. Then hopefully they'll just discontinue the SPRPG's entirely and focus on the MMO.

Skyrim may very well have been the last of it's kind in that line of games... It's all about ESO now...
