Gtx580 Users Thread

Hello first off.

It's here!!

While at first I was like urrr look at the graphics, I need to realized this is a console port and its the game play that matters. I am running on a GTX580 on Ultra settings.
I booted up fraps to see what was happening during the first part of the game (in the dungeons) and it was around 40 fps. I expected better than this so was surprised
when we finally got outside it shot up to 60fps. Shouldn't this be the other way around?

Is there any kind of tutorial, or do we need to learn, pause, read up. I am only around an hour in so will update when I get chance, I have been spoilt with the
Witcher 2 grx so it is going to take a while. Some of the textures on weapons seem very low res, even on 1980 x 1020 but I will give the game a chance.

How are you finding the game so far?

I have to say the grx get better as you go further in, framerates are all over the place though.

I have this card but I won't have the game until tomorrow evening. (Physical copy is shipping to work).

What are your other specs? I have an i7 920 processor and 6 gigs of ram, my monitor resolution is 2560x1440 and I'm running the Windows 8 Developer Preview for my OS. Hopefully I'll be able to run it on ultra but we'll see.

That's strange. A GTX 580 should max this game with 60fps.

I'd guess it's that lovely old engine the "new" engine is based on.

Most likely a VSync issue.

"To disable VSync in Skyrim, add iPresentInterval=0 to the bottom of the [Display] section of the Skyrim.ini file in the \Users\[Username]\My Documents\My Games\Skyrim directory."

I am using a pair of GTX 580's and I am hoping to be able to run in surround across 3 1920 X 1200 monitors (therefore 5760 X 1200). The Witcher 2 runs at that resolution just fine and looks awsome. I will let everyone know when I get the game tomorrow.

DO we have to mess about in config files to get it too run smooth on a gtx580? if this is a consol port surly it would run even faster?

One 580 gets around 50 FPS at 1920x1080, so don't get your hopes up. :/

I'm getting reasonable framerates on my GTX 580 but not what I would expect, hopefully a driver update will help <_<

I just dropped a brick of $$$ on a new computer just for SKYRIM so I could run a high res texture mod in the future, and now I find my gtx 580 won't even max it with 2004 textures? Disappointment doesn't even begin to describe what I'm feeling about Bethesda right now.

I feel LIED to. And as someone who has played since Daggerfall, I feel betrayed too.

I have a gtx 580, overclocked to 1GHz and I have the same issue as mentioned above - framerate is ~40, sometimes drops below 30. But, I noticed a weird thing - msi ab shows that gpu usage is at 40% most of the time and when the fps drop occurs, gpu usage drops even below 10% (!!!!!!!)
First thought - not enough RAM (I have 4GB) but RAM usage was at ~3GB
Second though - HDD is too slow, reinstalled the game to my SSD, didn't help
But than I noticed that only 1 cpu core is being used, so I guess that's the problem
Also, I'm using Phenom II 1055t overclocked to 4,1GHz

Wth, did they purposefully gimp the PC just to boost 360 sales? This is not a driver issue, this is a dev-side issue and I think I'll be canceling my preorder now... and wait till they sort this ^#%* out.

I get low GPU usage as well with my GTX 580. Also purchased this to max out Witcher 2 which it does flawlessly :) In Skyrim though, MSI Afterburner reports sub 50% gpu utilization and my CPU isn't being taxed much either. Ram Usage stays low as well. Major kudos for a company actually concerned about scaling this to lower end systems, but what about those of us that have the higher ones? :)

Question.... Did you set it on ultra or did the game detect your settings? I have a GTX 580 3GB and it set it on high. I left it as is and my card is still at factory settings. The game seems to run pretty smooth for me.

a friend of mine just started to play, he's in the cave running away, he maxed EVERYTHING and he's playing with 55-60 fps (v-sync enabled), his rig:

i5 2500 3.3ghz
gtx 580
8gb ram ddr3 1600mhz
monitor 23" 1920*1080

he'll tell me how the performance are once he reaches riverwood

Running at 2560x1440 with all settings maxed out

System:
i7 2600K @5.0gz Water cooled

Tried out the VSync disabling, i still dip into low FPS at the same spots, and when it isnt dropping, its tearing so bad i want VSync back on :P

Don't have a GTX 580 myself, but I do have a GTX 590 (and let's face it, I'm in a minority here) and I am experiencing the same issues you guys are. A fine, constant framerate indoors, but sporadic outdoors.
