Same thing happened too me in FO3 in Nuketown but i did the wait 3 days thing and it stopped.

There should still be a "wait" button. On 360 its the "back" button... Don't remember what it is on PC

You're probably not going to enjoy this game if the puzzles get any harder. That puzzle alone has everything explained to you in very clear terms.

As for getting back to Riverwood I had a similar problem, but I fast travelled back to the Jarl as I had business there. When I loaded in a guard stopped me and put me under arrest, it cost me 40 Septims. I don't know what I did, as far as I know I did absolutely nothing, but I was fined 40 Septims right there.

Open your inventory, go check the claw, check the back, the symbols are arranged in order in there

On pc wait button is T

Just leave the area and wait. From other Bethesda works, citizens usually calm down after awhile. Unless like New Vegas with the reputation system, but that isn't in Skyrim.

Try not pissing of the townspeople...

And if you do get a bounty for killing chickens thats not at all surprising since you are litrally taking away an important food source.

I was under the impression this game did have an individual settlement/faction reputation system.
