Han Wood Elf Solo

So, lovin' the game so far. It arrived on Thursday and i've spanked away a piddly 30 hours and i've only just about got to grips with one tiny section of the map! The scenery is jaw dropping, the character design is signifcantly deft for every race and creed and the score just drip feeds atmosphere straight through the ears.

However i do have on problem and it is this: Playing the role of the Rogue is pretty unsatisfying. Now i mean rogue in the Han and Chewie sense of the word.. i created my character in the vein of the charming, light footed, deft handed loose moraled smuggler who you like to imagine before he got mixed up in all thet rebellion nonesense. I chose a wood elf because they're good with a bow (blaster) and great with animals (Chewie). So i set off into Skyrim with dreams of standing up and looting; but not murdering, tavelling caravans. Sweet talking Baronesses, one hand working up her thigh, the other browsing her purse. Hanging around in low life taverns, drinking and gambleing while eyeing up potential marks and generally leading the seedier side of life.

Now, i'm not an idiot. This is a description of the role i wanted to embody within the game, much as the RPG genre encourages you to do, not the range of things i expect to be able to do at the press of a button. I just find it disappointing that upon being asked to fetch the family kidney stone from the bladder of the dragon Ullric the Man Eater (not a spolier (i hope)). Instead of pricking up your ears like an exciteable bunny; the words 'I could do that for you' gushing from your mouth without a moments thought as to what the Fu#k you'll be getting yourself into, you can't stand back and say..'What's in it for me fancy pants?'. Most of the quests just have too much of a goody two shoes vibe about them..

The same applies in the world. This is a true example: I entered a cave in the wall of a misty mountain and crept through the tunnel until i came to an opening that revealed.. A Wolf Fighting pit.. a fresh corpse stood at the feet of the current reigning champion.. awesome.. so, with a fancy for a quick gamble and a pint of mead i stood up and walked to the bar. But before i could order there were seven red dots on the compass and a double handed axe of Overpowered cleaving me in twain.. THAT is exactly the kind of place my character would love so why was i instantly mistaken for Sir Gunter the Sanguine and Celebate Heromonk?

I just wish Bethesda had peered behing the watershed on this one, i think the game is missing a huge and vital dimension.. before you say it - Thieves Guild and the Dark Brotherhood don't count as they are stories in their own right not a natural layer of the game world. (Thieves Guild is awesome though!!)

So. Anyone agree?

TL.DR - Why does the game assume i want to be a Hero?

Much love though, heres to another 30 hours : )

I've been playing a mostly good character, so I haven't seen this much, but if that's the case, it does take away a layer of gaming and that's too bad. I have noticed that where I'd expect to be able to say, "sure, I'll help you, for a price" it tends to just let me say, "yeah, I cant help you," or no, "I don't wanna." Which again, takes away an option, which is a bit odd in a game like this.

Too bad, maybe they'll fix it?
