Hard drive hangs on load screens

In any game I play, be it WoW, D3, SC2, Battlefield 3, or Skyrim, if I've been playing long enough, it won't get past any loading screen. While this is happening, the hard drive activity light will either be completely blank (not even those intermittent idle blinks), or it will be constantly on, but no noise coming from the hard drive.

It even happens sometimes when I'm not playing a game, but anything that is loaded into memory still functions. I can still view the web page I'm on, switch tabs, minimize, and everything, I just can't load anything new. The computer isn't frozen, but it never recovers from this unless I force reboot it.

This inevitably happens with every hard drive I put into this computer, and it's really starting to get annoying.

The hard drive temperature is a little high, but I've seen hard drives run hotter than that and operate just fine, so I don't think this should be a problem.

Power saving mode? I used to have similar problems in some games when the OS powered down the HDD with my game data on it. Check windows power options and make sure the HDD is set to never power down.

It was set to the default 20 minutes, I'll see if changing it to never helps.

Could be a bad cable or port.
That's possible, I'll check that out at some point.

Well, I think this instance might have just been a corrupt save. 2 of my latest autosaves and my quick saves don't work and cause it to hang, but the oldest autosave works. I guess something happened in between those two that caused a corruption.

Still do have the underlying problem though.

Your hard drive is running hot, hotter than I'd allow, but not dangerously hot.

Bad cable/bad connection/bad mobo are most likely culprits.

Well, probably either a bad mobo or bad SATA port. This cable was taken from a working computer that didn't have this problem, so was the hard drive. Either way, I'm getting a new computer at the end of August so I guess I'll just deal with it for now.
