[REQ] Harder Lockpicking or FO3 style Lockpicking.

Post » Sat May 19, 2012 8:32 pm

Title pretty much says it but I am wondering how difficult it would be to implement this
as a mod. The general consensus with a lot of players is that vansky lockpicking
too easy.

Although, opinions on this vary (see video below).

Um unless I am mistaken the lockpicking in Skyrim IS the exact same as the lock picking in FO3?

Except instead of bobby pins Skyrim uses actual lock picks?

So confused...

I thought FO3 style lockpicking was easier, the pins tend not to break the millisecond they hit something.

I agree, you can pick any lock with a lockpick skill of 15. And you find so many lockpicks that you never run out of picks, even if you waste 2-3 on expert or master locks. Oh, and the person playing in the video obviously has no idea what he is doing. To be fair he admitted that himself if you look at the comments.

While Fallout lockpicking was just as easy at least there was a skill requirement to open locks. Like minimum skill of 50 to open an average lock.

Personally I would prefer a Morrowind style lockpick system where chance of success depends on your skill (and perks eventually). With a minimum skill/perk requirement to open locks of a certain level.

In Fallout 3/NV the locks are gated so you need to invest in the skill if you want to open them. In Skyrim you can open any lock at level 1 if you have enough picks to burn through.

Making lockpicks rare would go a long way towards fixing it.

Mmmm...true, I always invest in that type of skill though so didn't really notice. Considering the amount of leftover code from FO in Skyrim, I guess a similar system to FO might be possible and would be better.

Agreed. The actual act of lockpicking in Skyrim is actually harder than it was in FO3 from what I remember...but since there are no thresholds needed (something I like) and lockpicks are so common (something I don't), it winds up being "easier".

I thought someone had already done a rarer lockpicks mod but couldn't find one. I did, however, find this:

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=646

That seems like a decent interim solution to the problem to me.

Actually your right FO3 was easier.

Also there was a glith in FO3 when you did move bobby pin and kinda know the sweet spot you just had to cancel and try again and pin was at full hp so basicly you only needed one pin and they fixed that in Skyrim :)

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1336 makes lockpicking significantly harder. I have ~45-50 in lockpick and I used ~20 picks trying to get open a master lock and then giving up.

Look for the fingersmith mod on nexus. IMO, it's not hard enough, but it makes picking noticeably harder.

With it you need a 40-50 skill to pick master locks reliably, and it takes a fair amount of picks.

These values are pretty easy to mess around with in SkyEdit too...I just made myself something of a combo of those two mods with super-tiny sweet spots (.3) for Master-level locks scaling up to near-vanilla for Novice ones, lockpick weight of 0.2 each, and double the skill level contribution to difficulty (so that higher skill makes for noticeably easier lockpicking and lower skill Master locks should be effectively unpickable). I'll mess around with it a bit, but my guess is that this will improve it a bunch for my taste. Now the worth of the perk tree is another question...it really should be folded in to Pickpocket or something similar.

If you are interested in changing pick rarity as well, it appears that most if not all of the loot lists are using LItemLockPick100, LItemLockPick75 and LItemLockPick25. I increased the chance none for those, and so far I am finding a lot less picks.

I personally wouldn't want to combine the Lockpick and Pickpocket trees. Pickpocket is only useful for thieves while Lockpick could be useful for any character. An alternative to getting rid of the tree could be to provide other means to open locks, like bashing and alteration spells. Warriors and mages wouldn't have to level Lockpicking or waste perks on it, but it would still be worth investing in for stealth characters since the other methods would attract attention.

The one perk that really needs to go is Unbreakable, it makes most of the other perks in the tree worthless.
