Has Magic Gotten Boring Yet?

Post » Thu May 10, 2012 4:25 pm

Been playing this game for.. 8 hours?
Level 14 character, focusing on Destruction.
Completed the College of Winterhold's Questline.. got spells.

I mean.. after you look past the effects and get all the spells, don't you find Magic to get more.. dull?
The animations are really eye opening in the beginning.. but since there are only about 85 spells.. and 20 for Destruction.. I don't find Magic any fun anymore.

Not to mention... spells are weak after you get to a certain level.
How will that really help you fight high level enemies?

What's your opinion on this?

Branch out. There's a few spells in the other colleges of magic that are pretty neat. So far my favorite new spell is in Illusion - Candlelight. It's awesome having a floating ball of light folow you around. ^_^ Plus I still get a kick out of burning everything alive with flames.

I think spell crafting would have made Skyrim's magic system a whole lot better.

I've played for 22 hours, pure Destruction mage and I only used two spells : Sparks and Lightning Bolt. Didn't get old. Not. One. Bit. Maybe you need to buy an ounce of patience and contentment.

I went mage first character, needless to say I feel cheated.
The spells dont increase in power, and I know people are going to mention perks but 50% increase is pitiful when your shock spell only does 7 damage.

Anyone know if there is a way to remove perks? Need to remove them from destruction skill tree.

Magic is super weaksauce compared to stealth and fighter builds. Was far better in Oblivion and Morrowind. The effects are nice, but it ends up very underwhelming.

Theres your problem, pal.

Focus on more spells instead of using the same ones.

@Vexxtech

I know right? I am hoping that their will be an aggressive version of the candlelight spell so that any enemies who get too close will get seared with flames :D.

Oblivions system, lol, boring after 1 hours.

Skyrims system, lost count of how many hours I've played but if i'd have to guess I'd say 50-60 hours, and not bored with it. Quite opposite, I want to make a full mage as my new character!

Yup, this is the only reason Oblivion's system was better. Both Oblivion and Skyrim svck in this area, but at least you could make up for it by crafting spells in Oblivion. You're just stuck with the weaksauce they give you in Skyrim.

I haven't gotten bored with magic yet, but I'm not using pure Destruction. I use my standard spells a lot, but I've also branched out into Bound Sword, the Ward spell (which works wonders against Dragonfire) and Oakflesh. I'm a mage/thief so i try to sneak in, but once I get detected I spam magic til I'm out of Magicka then attack with my Bound Sword until it recharges. The bound weapons are much better in this game because they have their own ethereal look, not just summoning a Deadric weapon.

I find magic complements stealth very well in this game since thief perks tend to help with carry weight and wearing the lightest armor make it so I don't have to put to much in stamina. I've already got 200 magicka, and I can run around and blast flames/ice/lightning for quite a long time, 7-8pts of damage or not, the only reason I beat the Dragur Wight Lord in Barrow Falls was due to my fire. He kept Disarm shouting me so I started jumping between 2 platforms he had to run around different platforms to get to and lightin' his ass up.

The way the perks are in this game it's much better to at least spread out your mage skills a little. 30 is resurrection will grant a Magicka recharge bonus. 30 in Alteration will allow you to start to ignore magic damage. 50 in Illusion makes all casting silent. If you max out Alteration you absorb %30 of every spell cast on you. I know Destruction is the most viable and fun of the mage schools, but with a little work in some others you can really flesh your mage out into a powerful character.

No spell crafting..?:(

That has always been one of my favorite things about casters in TES.

The magic system in Skyrim is interesting thus far, but I also miss custom spellmaking as it existed in Oblivion. I am hoping for a new wizards tower dlc that includes the traditional spellmaking/enchantment altars as a option for dedicated mages (Winterhold graduates) only.
