Has the repair skill become less essential?

Post » Tue Jan 04, 2011 10:52 am

Personally I loved Fallout 3 but I thought that the repair skill was FAR too essential to the game. Has the repair skill become less essential this time around? Personally I got tired of weapons breaking all the time unless you had 100 repair and lots and lots of spares.

I agree. Especially since it appears that skill points will be much less plentiful I'd be nice not to have another almost required max skill.

Things degrade slower over time and the higher your skill is the slower things degrade, in addition there are parts kits to aid in repairing when you don't have a duplicate item.

How about actually requirng to carry a set of tools like they did in fallout 1 and 2, the repair kit and the super repair kits! I think it should be required to collect tools, and there should be more things repair than just guns! Repair is one of my favorite skills because I love being able to repair thing to squeeze more items into my inventory so I don't have to make 50 trips to the same spot to sell loot. I really don't know why you would want repair to be less essential? For my opinion I think for hardcoe mode repair should be super essential! And as for regular mode or whatever maybe it could be less essential, I really don't hope they change too much with the repair skill except maybe requiring a set of tools to repair various things out in the wastelands. The only thing I think lacked with repair skill, when compared to FO1&2 was the fact that there really wasn't much to repair out in the wastelands except guns. An example, in either fallout 1 or 2, if you had a high enough repair skill you could repair a generator and turn the lights on in a vault or a blown up military base! But as far as being too essential, I think the skill is perfectly fine and you could get away without adding into it, if you liked paying caps and accept that the weapon could only be repaired to about 75%, that is without point look-out add-on.

Since now companions give perks - it has been revealed, that having particular one of them (don't want to spoil the others on the forum, witch one of them - I've checked Fallout wikia for far too long..."what a shame" haha) in team will make your equipement degrade a lot slower.

Also, the performance of your weapon won't start degrading as soon as you use it. This time around, the condition of the weapon has to get down to about half until it affects how the weapon shoots.

That said, repair has been given more value in other areas though. Its the skill that governs your ability to use reloading benches and make your own ammo.

YOU MEAN I CAN USE THE COMBAT SHOTGUN FOR MORE THAN 10 SHOTS BEFORE IT BREAKS! THAT'S GREAT NEWS!... and here I thought no news was good news.

You can even swing your titanium crowbar more than once, before it breaks down this time!..........

........AAAAAAAAAAAWWWWEEEEEESSSOOOMMMMEEEE

But let's not be picky - Obsidian probably made all things more reasonable this time. Bethesda just made a gameplay beta test with FO3.

Well, they have doctor bags which heal limbs, so repair kits would work.

Did we play the same game? . I had playthroughs with 40 repair skill, and had no problems . there were so many spares i had to throw out most of them .
i only maxed the repair skill up to 60 .

And you can also repair things to 100% from level 1, repair just increases the amount of condition that repairing restores. So, at low level, you'll eat up dupes and repair kits, but at high repair skill level you will need only a few.

I already forgot, is the only way to get the kits to purchase them?

That's the only way I've seen but I wouldn't be too surprised to see repair kits in random loot lists.

Um you didnt need to spend a point on repair in fo3 as books gave at least 25 points and items gave 5 more and bobblehead 10 more and you only needed 50 to repair to 100%.

Personally I enjoyed repair skills, and I hope we can actually open up more dialogue with a higher repair skill.

Oh and to the person who said you HAVE to carry tools, false, it only boosted your repair skill.

Also with Repair, you can create different types of ammo like AP and Hollow-Point rounds.......

The biggest thing is that you don't need 100% repair skill to repair items to 100% condition; the repair skill makes your repairs more effective, but with enough spare weapons or repair kits, anyone can fully repair a weapon.

For mine, knowing that the shotgun was going to be cactus in next to no time and suicidal in the face of a reaver only added to the challenge and allure of the game!

in Fallout 3 having a high repair skill was essential for keeping your weapons, nobody in the wasteland can repair for [censored], so I hope they made a few minor changes if nothing
