I have no friends but I like to meet some in Elder Scrolls O

  • When you want to enter the game no server list appears. You just click “Play” and you are in Tamriel. All players are housed on one “mega server” but in several separated worlds. But these worlds are not stable. The system can add new players to the world or can merge several worlds into one. It is a new technology that sets new MMO standard.
I fear that this will make each time I login to "my world" seem like a "random" world[lobby] cus there is new people each time, there is no 'sense of community' - am I wrong in this? I do hope so. :ermm:

Secondly, I'm not quick with adding new people I get to know as friends but without the stable world, I may never meet them again?

Like a random dungeon in World of Warcraft, new people each time and if I don't add them, I might never see them again.

I guess the concept is, if you play and meet someone and add them to your friends list then you'll be plonked with them next time. That way you'll be together, same by extention of the Guilds and things I guess.

Well that is the thing. We don't know 100% how it will work. What my thoughts are is that everyone is hosted on 1 giant server, but there are different "phases" of each area so the screen is not just constantly crowded. You can still message and switch phases to whomever you want to group with or such. What the technology sounds like it does is take a look at your friends list or guild list and instantly drops you into the same phase of the world as they are in as a default. So it is not like just because you log out and don't have a friend list created that you never can see or talk to the person you just grouped with again unless by some stroke of luck you are on same phase.

What about role playing? Most of the people I role play with - I don't have them\or ever add them to a friend list because it's a large crowd\community of 100's of people.

It should go that once you have an established list of friends or questing partners or raiding buddies or whatever you call them, the servers will find them and put you with them when you log in. I assume you can choose to find your party or go on your own adventure at some point in this process.

What if there is some people I see a lot, doing role playing that I think is fun to watch. They may have a community themself but I don't want to join them, at all.
Just that they bring a sense of community, familiar faces that is fun to come back to, without bonding friendship with them.

Do you know what I mean?

I roleplay but with TES I am happy to do that on my own. Might be a setting you flick so they can put you with other roleplayers.

Dont worry bro, there are many RPers, you can always talk to them in game, and who knows perhaps ZOS will add a social media API to keep a friends list out of game for other communities?

you wont be alone, youll make and play with plenty of friends.

Its not just friends, generally the AI will try to match you with people you have grouped with in the past

Example #1
You walk into a town in real life, you do that now for 10 years and you get to notice familiar faces and watch what they are doing, those familiar faces.

Example #2
You walk into a town in real life, you do that now for 10 years and you see new people everyday you have never seen before.

Which of the examples give the sense of being a part of a community? #1 of course, right?

Don't worry about not knowing anyone. It's just matter of time when you run into someone who needs help with some quest that you're at. Then you will see that he is in the guild.. And it all begins.

For your roleplaying needs. Consider this: the people you are all roleplaying with are adventurer's as well. So the odds of them being in the same spot for long enough for you to leave (aka log off) and come back and them being in the same area are low. So the small town familiar face example won't exactly work.

You also always got the forum where you could ask to team up with some people.

I think someone misunderstood what I meant because of my poor name for the topic.

But my point was!
After playing World of Warcraft for 5 years, right.
I noticed the other day a Gnome named Swizzle and then it came back to me that for a long time ago,
we shared a fun little conversation as we had this little role playing "event" where we did some trading and such.

Now, I didn't have this fresh in my memory but the other day I saw him again! And I thought, wow.
He is still around! That is so cool! So I said hello and he kinda remembered me and that was bit neat, you know?

This is what I mean by sense of community.

Not sense of friends or guild.

But the community outside of your friendships\guild.
Do you know what I mean? :(

That will all still be there on the megaserver. Let me use an example for you (also if i'm not following you just let me know and i'll stop commenting lol):

Small Town (WoW server) = less people, higher chance to see someone again.

Big City (the megaserver) = tons of people, less chance of seeing someone twice.

Still a sense of community, its just the community is huge so your chances of running into that same random person again are lowered.

Most MMO's have many servers which makes it hard to find people you met before. TESO has one server broken down into worlds that can merge together and will put you with people that you have played with before. Sounds to me that TESO will make it "more" likely that you would meet someone your met before compared to other MMO's.

Ah, sorry, I missunderstood you.
Well I think community will be quite.. Not WoW alike. More like server-alike in some server in WoW.
There will many people, big world, and it's quite likely you will run into the same people from time to time, and well I suppose it will kinda give the feeling of the big big family, even tho we all know every family has few members who we can't stand :P
It kinda reminds me of my RPing server in WoW, biggest on EU servers (I won't promote it). It's big, always with high population, sometimes I even have to wait in que, but after some time being part of it, it is very, well.. Warm and you feel like you know everyone and it's quite awesome feeling. You always run into someone who you raided with, and who will "Stop by" and chat for you for few minutes to see how you're doing. I think we might have similar thing on TESO too, but it's too early to say just now :)

If you meet people from other servers in World of Warcraft, you can add them as your friend and invite them to your group and you will be able to play on the same realm, together..
So that stuff is good.

But here is the thing! If you are a role player, you don't want to play on the same "space" you have people naming themself "JustinBieberIsHot" "Skyrimboy" "WoodelfWarrior", right.
So when there is just one big mega server, there is very little to nothing a GM can do for you.

So if you are somewhere in the world with your friends and "JustinBieberIsHot" stands next to you while you role play, what can you do about it? Not much.

But it does for sure break any sense of the game world, for a role player.

Just ignore or whatever. There will be roleplaying communities/guilds, and you will surely find your spot in it. You can never run away from "lolers" they are everywhere :(

Well hopefully the devs take this into account, I use to play STO and it was nice because you could enter a first, middle, and last name for your character and so I very rarely seen people with weird names. They could also put kind of system in place to check this.

That is the problem.

The community on the server, will be NEW everyday, no familiar faces of strangers that is familiar.

You know strangers can be familiar without having them as friends, strangers do contribute to the community without being your friend but if there is a new stranger each day.
There will be NO familiar strangers,
meaning no sense of community as it's more of "I visit a new city - in real life" each day type of thing.

I believe they said you can tick boxs that sort you into what type of world you want, that way all Rpers are together as are pvpers etc. That would create community and somewhat stop 'Justinbeiberishot'
