Any time you install a game, even if it's a pre install from Steam, there will always be another download before playing. Happened for Civ V, happened for New Vegas, it's just the way it is now. I guess this is so people can't pirate the game.

I have no idea otherwise. Always seems to install same day patch, or you just don't isntall the complete game anymore and NEED Steam to finish the job.

Cancel the download, delete contents, and retry. It should then install from disc.

By any chance, did you have Steam installed before you put the disc in or not?

It's possible that Steam is preventing you from installing the game until release date, but is instead letting you pre-download (i.e install!) the game from Steam directly, since you have presumably already registered your Skyrim copy with Steam. That from what I can gather is what is happening to me as well, only I cancelled the download and re-inserted the disk to see if I could still install that way when the game officially "unlocks" (it looks like I can). In any case, my guess is you would still need to download the day 1 patch before you play, but strongly doubt it'll be anywhere near 5.7GB in size.

did you try the link i posted if not here it is in text
Using Steam launch options to install retail games from disc Log in to Steam and click on Library. Right-click on the game, select Delete local content, and confirm. Insert the first disc into your computer. Close Steam (Steam > Exit). Press Windows Key + R to open Run In the Run window type: "C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -install E: Replace E: with the CD/DVD drive you are installing from if is not correct. Replace C:\Program Files\Steam if your Steam installation is not in the default location. Press OK. Steam will launch and ask you to sign in if you do not have your password saved. Your installation should continue from the disc.

yes thats what I got yesterday. It accepted CD key and the only option I got was a preload, at roughly 5.7GB in size. I am hoping that I can install from the disc once it is unlocked for Western Europe

How about unplugging your internet and shutting down Steam, then install?

I tried doing what was suggested to instal it from disk, it doesnt work because the game isnt released yet!

The only way to install the game before it launches is to pre load.

Yes I deleted my game files before trying, and it wouldnt let me install from the disk until it releases.

I followed the guide in that link 100% accurately. The game wont install from disk until it is released.

thats just because steam is a POS program that is realy nothing but malwere/ spywere, thats why i never use it and never will. saddens me that Bethesda would use such a program from the get go. if everything i'v heard about it is true this wont be the first such problem you'll have and wont be the last. just hope that Steam doesn't find some reason to shut down all your Steam games.

(they did it to a friend of mine and he still hasn't been able to get an explanation from them as to why)

What the [censored] are you talking about? You yourself have never even used it and you're ripping into it like it's an abomination from Activision. I have over 40 games bought and playable through Steam. Never had an issue. Seems like a PBKAC issue to me.

And most likely your friend either illegally obtained a game and was dumb enough to link it to steam or he was slammed by VAC.

VAC bans only affect the online multiplayer components of the games that make use of it. It has no effect on any other game. It doesn't even prevent all multiplayer in those affected games if you can find servers that don't check users VAC standing.

I think you have no idea what you're talking about.

And OP: the reason it isn't working is most likely because the game hasn't unlocked for your region yet.
