Personally I've found that College robes, the Novice hood, Steel plate boots, and either gloves or the steel plate gauntlets look prety good together.

Steel Plate gauntlets and boots, ebony armor, helm of Yngol. Looks decent, protects like a brick wall.

Ebony Mail + Ebony Boots + Ebony Gauntlets + Nightingale Hood. Looks amazing.

I always wear Konahrik, archmage robes, and dragonscale gauntlets and boots. It's kind of an ancient Nordic shaman look (even though I'm an Argonian, so more like an ancient Nordic shaman with a tail ).
