Having fraps open makes Skyrim run better - wtf?

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 10:08 am

I have a 4.2 GH quad core and HD6950 2gb graphics card, but ive been getting a bit of fps lag out in the open, but is fine indoors. I just opened fraps to record something and realised.. its made my game immensely smoother. (Not recording, just having it open) A dramatic increase. My computer should be able to handle Skyrim no problem, and it proves it does because its perfect when Fraps is open.

What the hell guys. o.O Can anyone explain this?

Try looking at processes in task manager and see if something is making it weird.

When Fraps is just idling, or when you're actually recording something?

I'm no expert but it might have something to do with memory allocation or multi-cores management.

I'm thinking it has something to do with your quad core and core management. Try running the game on only one or two of your cores and see what happens.

My guess is that Fraps is forcing the Windows multi media timer adjustment just like running Windows Media Player in the background does for games. Most people will see roughly 15-25 FPS increase.

Run the game, hit ctrl + alt + del and bring up the task manager. From there, click the processes tab, find skyrim.exe, right click and press "set affinity". From here you can select which cores to run the games on. Hope this works, good luck :)
