HD5970 2GB - I've Tried Everything - Nothing Works

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 3:35 pm

Other than the texture popping, my main issue I am having with the game is performance, 30fps is the most I can get out of it.

System Specs
X6 1090T @ 3.8ghz
HD5970 2GB
8GB Ram
Win 7 Pro
Asus Formula IV

I have tried drivers - 11.10 bf3 beta, 11.9, 11.9 then with the rage performance driver over the top, and now I,m using the new 11.10 preview (the latest) which made zero difference to popping or performance.

Every time I have uninstalled the previous driver before installing another

I have tried every 16:9 resolution

I have tried every iteration of CCC options, vsync, aa, af, peformance / quality sliders and everything in between.

I have tried every iteration of the rageconfig.cfg file settings.

I have tried re-installing the game.

I have tried disabling CataAI via the profile.xml file.

I am using fraps for fps, I have tested it in other games to make sure it is not locked at 30fps and it is not, the 25-30 fps it is stating I am getting in-game is correct, feels like 30 fps too (horrible)

I have spent 10 hrs + trying to get this game to run properly, I spend hours, then give up, then come back to it the next day, hoping for some patch or driver that works but nothing does.

EDIT: I have also tried placing the atioglxx.dll in the main rage folder with every driver.

I had the exact same issue with the exact same video card. All I did was remove my drivers, booted into safe mode, used Driver Cleaner Pro to remove all ATI drivers, booted back normally, installed the newest ATI driver 11.10 preview 2 and...wala! No more issues. I even added the
+vt_pageImageSizeUnique 8192
+vt_pageImageSizeUniqueDiffuseOnly 8192
+vt_pageImageSizeUniqueDiffuseOnly2 8192
to my rage.exe properties for high textures and the game screams. I really hope you can get yours to work man, I know how frustrating these issues can be. I'll check back later on this post if you have made any changes or have any updates/questions.

Do you have a link for a driver removal tool? Driver cleaner pro is not free, driver sweeper seems to be discontinued, I don't trust any of the other sources I've found.

here is the link for the free version that I used, just click on the blue "download" button in the middle-top of the page.

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/security/system_cleanup/driver_cleaner_pro.cfm

After using this in safe mode, remember to boot back into normal mode and install the newest driver.

Since the .INF cannot be found, just re-download the newest driver, that should fix your problem.

Ok I followed your suggestions, no change, still 25-30 fps with any ccc gfx setting, menus run at 30fps, cut scenes 30fps, game 25-30fps, I give up. I built this system about 10 months ago and I have never had any problem with any game, just install, crank setting to max, enjoy, but this game, takes epic fail to whole new level.

I understand your frustration, but it's far from an epic fail. Mine is running now with no issues along with many others. Is the game playable without artifacting? Do you still have screen popping or has that been resolved? Or are you just trying to max out your fps?

The config file minimizes the popping, but how can it only run at 25-30 fps in any resolution, you would think lowering resolution would increase fps yes? One would think that setting ccc settings all to performance would increase fps aswell. Hell I've even set the LOD to 100 so everything is just a blurry mess and still no increase in fps. Ive tried lowering res and ccc settings with and without config file and still 25-30 fps, something is totally wrong here.

EDIT: To clarify, with the new drivers and no config file the texture popping is as bad as it ever was, no change at all. I know that the driver cleaner worked because it was the first time that after I installed the drivers my settings (eg manual fan overrides) were set back to default, all other driver installs these settings were kept from the previous driver.

the ATI drivers and expecially crossfire/dual GPU cards have been screwy all week with this game.

As Bethesda, Carmack, and ATI have stated, they are quickly working on a massive driver update.

Damn. I can play the Witcher 2 on almost highest settings, but when it comes to RAGE I can't even move about in-game without slices of the screen turning blurry or briefly glitching (as if I'm looking in at the world through a faulty CCTV monitor)! That's just wrong. I'm running an Alienware M17X R3 (notebook), with i7 2.4 Ghz, 6 GB RAM and AMD Radeon HD 6990 M graphics card. I've downloaded the specialised RAGE driver for ATI cards, and the rest of my drivers are up to date. The game seems to work smoothly - that is, until I move the mouse in-game, at which time the above mentioned issues kick in. Bethesda, please release a patch that sorts this sort of thing.

On another note, this is the last bloody time I I pre-order a game. I even had this one shipped first class! I agree with the people who are sick of developers showing disrespect to consumers: If it isn't tested and certified, it isn't a finished product. It's defective, and shouldn't be sold until polished. I've ended up paying for glitches and hours of attempted fixing time, instead of day-of-release satisfaction. This game had better work soon, or I won't bother with Id again.
