'Heartache by the Number' Bug

Post » Thu Jan 20, 2011 9:49 am

Okay, so I had gotten Cass as a companion and was looking forward to completing the quest. I was at the part in 'Heartache by the Number' where I had to investigate Crimson Caravan Company and Van Graffs. I went to Freeside to find proof in Van Graffs (In the Gold Rush building). Since I had Cass as a companion (and I didn't have the required skill to find any evidence) I played it smart and attacked the guard at the front door. This lead about 5 other guards of Van Graffs to appear outside within seconds. I then beat them to death with a Rebar Club, and then told Cass to stay put as I went inside the building. I then proceeded to kill the rest of the guards and checked over the place to make sure no one was left. Afterwards I headed back outside to get Cass, when she was gone. I suspected she may have been dead since the moment I came out a Gold Rush crier greeted me, by trying to kill me, but it never said she had died. I returned to the Mojave Outpost where Cass originally was and a message popped up saying 'Cass has returned to Mojave Outpost'. This was after at least 5 hours of doing different quests until I returned to the outpost and it displayed the message.

Besides that bug there is a small visual bug I found while exploring the southwest corner of the map, in between the 'Smith Mesa Prospector Camp' and 'Blue Paradise Vacation Rentals'. Along the cliff edge there is a spot where the rock rises up but there is a big hole in the graphics where players are capable of going under the cliff edge and possibly getting stuck.

I love that quest, I also killed the Van Graffs, however I took Cass inside with me and told her to wait in the bathroom at the back of Gold rush, I shut the door, and used the other bathroom door as a shielding spot killing every guard within the building. After that I returned to Cass who was still waiting in the bathroom. She hadn't disappeared back to the Mojave Outpost as you stated. So perhaps you should have kept her inside the building when you were killing the guards inside. Cass also cant be killed she can only become unconscious for a certain amount of time so that wouldn't have been the case. As for the other glitch I haven't seen it as of yet

That doesn't make sense though. The only reason I told her to stay outside is because in previous tries of slaughtering everyone in the building, she died every time so I told her to stay put outside.

She shouldn't die thou, because you are doing a quest with her she can only become unconscious whether she is in or outside, and even after the quest she cant die. She temporarily collapses to the floor for a couple of seconds, and then gets back up, this is the same with other companions such as Rex the dog who just becomes unconscious and then gets back up. She can only die if you have told the guy in the place to kill her.

Well I brought her in with me to the place and the overwhelming amount of plasma hitting her caused her to die in seconds and the message even popped up 'Cass has died.' 'You can no longer complete the Heartache by the Number' quest.

That's strange, there is something wrong here because she doesn't die when I do that quest, even when I decide to shoot her in the head a couple of times she just becomes unconscious, well if you still on that quest ,shove her in the tatty bathroom until you have killed all the guys, she will still be their waiting for u, just dont leave her outside just in case another glitch appears or she buggers off lol

That still doesn't explain why she'd disappear suddenly when I leave her outside though.

Nope, it doesn't. I have no idea why that happens. When I did her quest I left her at the outpost while I dealt with both CC and VG. After I was done with that I added her as a companion finished taking to her and got Boone back.

The strange thing is that I abandoned the quest since I couldn't find her and several hours later (or about an hour ago) I fast traveled to Mojave Outpost and the message popped up. Meaning that Cass should have still been in Freeside but I looked everywhere I didn't see/find her.

well if companions go missing try waiting 7 in game days.probably that 5 hours of you doing other quest was about 7 in game days if you didn't rest or wait or if you did idk but thats probably it.you know theres a bug if its been past 7 in game days and still nothing.
by the way what perk do you get from cass? even tho i played 37 hours before all hell broke loose lol i never attained her so if someone could tell me that would be great.
Another question, say your at level 30 and still some of your stats will be below 100 on lockpicks things like that how do you get them to be 100?or do you just find those magazines like in fallout 3 to raise those stats.i need to know cause even after the next patch we probably wont be able to use our saves and ill have to start a new game so whatever will make it quicker to get back to where i was in at least stats thank you :)
