Help! I can't become Thane of Whiterun again

Post » Sun Jun 03, 2012 3:45 am

I became Thane of Whiterun after killing the dragon fairly early in the game. Did a lot of quests and quest lines after it and sided with the Stormcloacks in the war. So basicaly as Thane I attacked Whiterun. So now after play mostly all the other main quests I am trying to become Thane of Whiterun again. I still own the Brezehome house and been doing all small quests for helping people of Whiterun but the option to become Thane just doesnt pop up. The Jarl doesnt want to ask me.

Can somebody help me please?

Have you asked him "Is there anything else to do?" Then he tells to help his people and own a property. When you have them completed tell him that you have done what he asked and he will give you the title of Thane. That's how it worked for me after Stormcloak quests. I became Thane of Whiterun twice in same play through - first for Balgruf and then for Vignar. If it doesn't happen this way in your game you probably have a bug there.

really? didn't think that was possible. especially in whiterun if you side with the stormcloaks and attack the city. yours may be the game with the bug there.

What makes you think you are not still Thane? You have a house. You have a Housecarl. You're a Thane.

I am not Thane. I tested by getting arrested. No option I am Thane, let me go.

Of course it is possible. On the side of Stormcloaks I made a great favor for Whiterun to wipe out the legion and the traitors who were supporting them. Also Stormcloaks made a favor for Vignar Gray-Mane by making him to be a new Jarl. He will give you a title of Thane but if you have already been Thane of Whiterun he will not give you a new house carl or weapon - he gives you only the title.

Intersting. I guess I never noticed I wasn't a Thane anymore after the Stormcloak quests. I still had a house. I still had my housecarl. It obviously made no difference since I didn't even know it. The fact I don't generally break the law may have something to do with that.

My problem is when I speak to the Jarl I have no option for that question. Is there anything else. It works with the others. I get 5 questions and its all about the clans, war and runing the city.

I don't know why you can't get it. I just went to talk Vignar and there it was: same question you can get with the most of Jarls.

Oh yes, it happened to me! Vignar gave me the whole Thane speech again, after I helped him gain the Throne of Whiterun! :) =p

I tend not to break the law in Whiterun or in Riften. I am thanes in those cities. I own homes there.

The only thing they didn't do in the game that I wish they did do is.... if you have a housecarl or spouse you have to pay upkeep.

I picked this from uesp-wiki (http://uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Thane), I hope it can help you with your problem.

"If the Jarl that granted you Thane is disposed of through the events of the Civil War you will lose the title. New Jarls are typically very willing to grant it back.
If a Jarl doesn't offer the necessary favors or Thane quest, try doing other quests in the Hold. It may eventually unlock."

@nick: Yeah. maybe when you being caught by the guard, your hand pressing A / skip chat fast, and you missed the dialogue

But remember, every thane have a limit

i think, 5000 bounty or less.

More than that, you cant answer with your "I'm a Thane"

Example:

1. Kill 1 guy at whiterun
Talk to the Guard, "Im a thane" Your bounty is gone

2. Kill 10 guys at whiterun
Talk to the guard, you only have a choice to pay your bounty, serve time in jail, or run away

My tips at number 2, when you were able to kill 10 guys, it means you were a god on that city, run away dude!
