Help Installing a CODEC on Windows 7 64 bit, please

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 11:05 am

Hello,

I'm trying to install a CODEC on Windows 7, 64 bit. The reason is to help with radio stutter with the Fallout 3 GNR Enhanced mod, but I think this is a generic CODEC install question so I'm going to ask in this General forum.

The specific CODEC is MADFilter.ax found here

http://fallout3.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=9719

or here

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/MADFilter.htm

and other places.

I believe I've followed the instructions. This is a 32 bit CODEC, so I've put it in a the Windows/System32 folder. I've then run the bat file as well as the equivalent... I opened a console as administrator and entered the command:

regsvr32 c:\Windows\System32\MADFilter.ax

I get a pop up with the following error: "The module "c:\Windows\System32\MADFilter.ax" failed to load; Make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or dependent .DLL files.; The specified module could not be found."

I've made sure that "MADFilter.ax" is in that location and that there was no misspellings. I've downloaded another copy of the MADFilter.ax just in case it was corrupted and got the same results.

Any recommendations? Am I just missing something very basic? Please help because I'd really like to play Fallout 3 with GNR Enhanced again (it worked fine on XP).

Thanks.

It may not support 64 bit as some Programs only support 32 bit. :stare:

You need to put it in SysWOW64. This may sound crazy stupid, but on 64-bit Windows, System32 is the 64-bit directory (name stayed 32 for compatibility reasons), and SysWOW64 is the 32-bit directory (Stands for System Windows 32-bit On Windows 64-bit).

Also you need to run the command prompt as administrator for regsvr32 to work

Also only download codecs from trusted sources. Many codecs are malware in disguise. Always make sure you really need the codec first, then verify the integrity of the codec before installing.

Thanks, but others that are using it say that they are running it on WIndows 7, 64 bit

Thank you, I will try that tonight. There are several posts saying that it worked in System32, but I will try SysWOW64.

Alternatively, if anyone knows of another there another mp3 CODEC I should try, I would be very interested. Apparently the default doesn't work very well, even if I bump up the audio cache and update interval.

I am very impressed DEFRON. I put the 32 bit CODEC in SysWOW64 and it loaded successfully.

You get a double +1 from me, and a :trophy:

But in retrospect it should have been blindingly obvious that a 32 bit CODEC should not go in system32, but should instead go into the aptly named SysWOW64 folder. Such an exquisite operating system, you have to wonder way Apple stock is way ahead of Microsoft /sarcasm
