Help: LOD generation

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 2:14 am

Title says it all, every time I generate the landscape the GECK crashes or the landscape generates incorrectly. I have no idea why, I have tons of ram, a good graphics card and decent processor, but it just does not work.

I would appreciate a kind person downloading my small mod and generating the landscape for me, the world space is called Bunker Epsilon, it is a small location and should not take too long to generate.

The esp is made with the latest version of the GECK, the zip also contains a bunch of custom content that is why the file is 37mb.

Thanks in advance. :)

Done and, Done!

Here is a link to your mod with generated LOD http://www.4shared.com/file/ZyExNooH/Bunker_Epsilon.html?. I'm not sure why your GECK would be crashing while trying to Generate LOD but, one tip is to not have anything loaded in the render window when building LOD. The render window eats ram and, could be the reason.

If you were getting any other errors look at http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=36693 It contains most files needed for LOD Generation, I do need to update it I've found a few missing files but, it is a good place to start.

If you need any more help feel free to hit me up. :goodjob:

Thank you CevSteel, I am downloading it as I type.

I have tried to work out what is wrong to no avail. When I generate the mesh it did not always show up, when I generated the textures it either crashed the GECK or left the landscape speckled white. I never had this kind of problem with the Oblivion CS.

I will probably take you up on your offer for help some day CevSteel, you might regret offering. :P

Cev, would you be interested in doing the LOD generation again for me? I must admit seeing bunker epsilon with the distant land was very satisfying, it was great that you helped me with that.

Unfortunately I am still unable generate the distant land correctly and creating regions without seeing how the placement affects ones view is problematic to say the least.

The world spaces I need are FTBunkerEpsilon, FTChicago and FTPreoria. They are quite small so hopefully it will not take very long to do. The download is about 58mb, I could have made the donload smaller by leaving out assets, but I was unsure if that would break the Geck generation.

Sure thing, It is helping me to test my LOD Essential modders resource, I haven't built my own worldspace yet and, built it blind. Only working off of my experiences with FO3. I've downloaded the file (size doesn't matter to me I've got a fast internet connection.) and, I will get it back to you as soon as I can.

I've got to run out for a bit but, will work on it this afternoon.

Thank you Cev I am in no hurry so please do not rush yourself.

I am not entirely sure what `LOD Essential modders resource′ is. When you complete it, would it be someone to help people like me generate LOD?

I packed up all the files needed to generate LOD they need to live in there appropriate file paths, not packed up in the BSA. I've also created the "Source Folder" and, all of the TGA textures. I Give a basic tutorial on LOD Generation and, explanations of the errors you may run into.

I'm not sure this will help you much, you sound like you have a good Idea of the process. It was intended to help people get all the necessary LOD files in place so, they could generate there LOD. After I figured out how the process worked in FO3 I thought I would be nice and, share my efforts. This way people wouldn't have to waste time digging all the LOD files out for themselves or, have to covert all the LOD textures to TGA's. Once New Vagus was released I took the time to Build the same pack for it because I knew I would eventually need it myself. Therefor I shared again.

I do need to update it, I found some missing files when I did the first worldspace for you. with luck I won't find any more and, I'll upload a complete version.

The process only took 30 minutes or so.

Being from the Midwest, Chicago in particular, when I tested the LOD I had to go to FTChicago and, thought I might give a bit of a critique. The Midwest is very flat, the closest thing we have to hills in chicago are highway overpasses. I do understand that your using the rocks to hide the distant view but, might I suggest using broken Buildings. We have tones of those, you should also add a portion of lake Michigan It is an important part of chicago, almost a landlocked ocean.

I could also see your towns being surrounded by grasslands and, dead corn fields once you leave the cities, towns all you see is corn for miles.

Hope this didn't sound like I was criticizing your work, in fact I think it's quite good and, looks promising. Can't wait to see where you go with this project.

Well anyway here's your file with LOD. http://www.4shared.com/file/O0tFhK24/The_Warrior.html?

Edit: fell free to hit me up for more help in the future. :foodndrink:

Chicago is just the working name for Brahmin Wood, a small Tribal village. the version you saw is very far from complete, it is still in the planning stage and I am happy to change it if it makes sense and would improve the look.

Being a small tribal village and the fact the original map did not have many buildings I am a little apprehensive on expanding it as doing so would make it look more like a city. Adding a lake and rolling farmland would expand the area and workload quite substantially but it might be worth the effort. I was worried I was going overboard with the rocks, I will mess about with the look of the map and see what I can do.

Unfortunately there is only so much I can do to keep the view distance and player movement restricted.

Thanks again for the LOD, it will help me a lot with planning and improving the areas. If you have comments for Preoria or Epsilon, let me know, Epsilon is my favourite, it does not look 100% like the original, but I think I captured the spirit.

Is this content from Fallout tactics? That is the only Fallout game I haven't played. Kind of thought you might be working on something to bring back the Midwest BOS. The work is a good start, thought if you were rebuilding my home town I would try to help. :whistling:

Bringing back the Midwest Brotherhood would be an interesting prospect though creating a complete Chicago would be a herculean task. My world building skills are okay, but it would take a team to make a mod like that, including someone who knows the locations well and another talented person to make plenty of custom models.

What I am doing is just recreating a few of my favourite regions and items from Tactics, just for the fun of it. I know many dislike the game, but I found it quite enjoyable.

I do not want to keep bothering Cev with my LOD troubles so I am posting my request here in case he or someone else with a free half hour can help me.

I have got the basic layout for a region I am currently working on but it is hard judging if the players view of the distance is correct without being able to see it. The worldspace is called FTDirtHaven and currently uses both DLC, the file size is a bit large because it includes some additional textures, models and things.
