Help! Microsoft and Apple Are Fighting Again - How Do I Get

Post » Sun Nov 18, 2012 12:23 am

So Microsoft and Apple are fighting again on my PC.

Now Mpg files are opening in Quicktime.

Can anyone talk me through fixing things so my Mpgs open with Windows Media Player again please?

Thanks in advance.

Uninstall Quicktime.

Alternatively, go to Control Panel>Programs>Default Programs>Set Default Programs, find WMP and change its defaults. Then look through Quicktime's settings to make sure it's not changing itself to default on startup. I wouldn't know where that is because I don't ever use Quicktime.

Hey thanks for that.

I found it myself having a quick look through.

Why do they have to create programs that are at odds with each other.

They should accept and respect people's choices.

Quicktime only features on my PC because I've got an iPhone and if I'm not being extra vigilant it gets installed.

Seriously, when you start your PC it's like a Boxing Day Sale, with dozens of programs all trying to squish through the door at the same time... "Me first... load me first"!

You'd think they would have realised this isn't the best way to run an OS by now.

Go to start and type "msconfig", go to the startup tab and uncheck all unnecessary programs, go to the Services tab and hit "Hide all Microsoft services" then proceed to uncheck all unnecessary services.
You may think "I use that a lot so I want it to start", but often it turns out that by not having it start automatically you can manually start it up faster when your computer loads faster.

EDIT: Oh and if you're unsure about a service, google it, you'll generally find someone else has tried to disable it or ask what its for.

It's not the fault of the OS if you install a bunch of programs and have them set to run on startup.

Most programs have an option to disable their autorun, either through the options or their system tray icon, or through msconfig if that fails. Or they give you a choice when you first install them.
