Help - troubleshooting a CTD

Post » Tue Sep 06, 2016 7:16 pm

A bit frustrated atm. I added say 4 mods to my game plus upgraded to newest MGE XE and MCP. Normally I'd use the binary procedure to narrow things down to a problem mod, but in this case I'm wondering if it's not a conflict involving several mods, not just one.

My char slept overnight at Eight Plates in Balmora. It's 5 a.m. when I exit through the street level door of the inn. I see the wall and can then turn to face the plaza area (where the FG is) and see an NPC teleporting at which point the game CTDs. This is consistent. OTOH, if I wait another hour to say 6:00 a.m. I can exit the Inn at the same spot without any problem.

First, does the CTD generate a log file somewhere? I'm using Windows 8, and it crashes gracefully (meaning I do not have a BSOD) compared to how earlier versions might react, but I don't see any info where to find a log file, if there is one, dealing with the problem.

My gut instincts think it's some type of conflict among Starfire's NPC (jac's lite version), magical diversity, MAO, Melian's Transport mod and advanced bartering (current version). I'm using MAO as the base for this game, and it makes major changes that I can't rule out being involved. I've been using the Starfire lite mod without problem in all my other games since it was released two years ago; it's just that the CTD is occuring with what I think is an SF NPC teleporting out just as I exit the Inn to the street.

There's also, though, advanced bartering. I noticed that every time I talk with an NPC, the dialogue window opens up with "an NPC" and refreshes after a very short time (1 second maybe?) refreshes the dialogue window with dialogue that would normally be there. So I wonder if there might some type of timing problem hardware/software wise that garbles things leading to a crash.

It doesn't help either that I've noticed a significant increase in CTDs that happen for no reason I can discern.

FWIW, here's my load list (mlox):

OKAY

MAGICAL DIVERISTY

You Have to be careful with this mod.

I'd Recommend This Being The Last Thing You Add to your mod.

I've had very slow games due to this.

The Other Plugins Just by the name could mean a CTD.

I'd Suggest Debunking Your Mod and Putting It Back Together Piece To Piece Until You Can Solve The Problem. :brokencomputer:

Do you have the Warnings.txt in the Morrowind folder?

If so then copy its content and paste it here into your post. But if you don't have the Warnings.txt then copy the content from the ProgramFlow.txt and paste it into your post.

@JH2011: No idea if this can help with your problem, but sometimes I can go past exterior CTDs if I start with MGE-XE distant land disabled and enable it (in-game with a MGE keyboard macro) only after the critical point

I had this exact same problem and found the culprit to be Starfire's NPCs. I uninstalled the mod and went back to MCA and it never happened again.

I have no idea exactly what causes the bug though.

It's hard for me to say. I've been using jac's Starfire Lite for several years now with no obvious problems. The volume of NPCs teleporting seems to slow things down at times in Balmora, but Balmora has always had FPS issues. I do think the NPC that was teleporting away was from the SF Lite mod.

But there are several mods I'm using that might have as a group caused the problem, not one specifically but collectively. The mods I'm thinking of use MWSE. I updated MWSE to Merzasphor's October 2015 beta version in order to try qqqbbb's Advanced Bartering. Melian's Teleport Transport mod, the first time I've used it in a game along with abot's patch to tone it down; requires MWSE. I've noticed that there are times that MWSE scripts take time to kick in.

It could be hardware issue and none of the mods are involved for all I know. My computer has a noticeable stutter with the opening MW scene (Azura's narrative) when starting a new game, Loading cells as my char moves from one cell to another seems slow sometimes. In the back of my mind, I wonder if the various scripts are colliding resulting in a slowdown or failure. I'll get a message that the game can't find a string or reference and CTD all the way to the desktop. However, I can immediately restart that same saved game that had the problem, and the game loads and starts without problem.

This was the only time I remember where the problem consistently recurred.

I had a similar http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1517663-npc-scripting-conflict-maostarfires-npc-additions-ctd/ due to interaction of SF and old v0.91 version of MAO. Using the v1.0 released version of MAO has completely fixed the issue for me without modification to SF. However, due to SF removing NPCs using setdelete without preceding disable, CTD could be in play if any other mod attaches scripts to these NPCs without disable check.

I'm also using 1.0 of MAO and SF, and also getting a crash unless I unload SF. It happens when I'm leaving the Pelegiad tradehouse, also when I try it with the lite version. I'll just have to play without the mod for now. I also tried playing without Protective Guards. That just helped speed my game up some.

Does anyone of you guys have a hint of what can cause a CTD, and what I mean by saying a hint, is something you can search for e.g a specific script in http://mw.modhistory.com/download-95-7040?

I once had an issue with Anjira when using RoHT, so I search for a specific script and found that the script was added by RoHT.
