Help me, it's vampire decision time!

Post » Tue Jul 19, 2011 4:14 am

Hello, could you spare some advice please? I could eat for a week, with just a single piece of advice.

Ok, so this is my first playthrough, and the Dark Brotherhood vampire has offered to make me a vampire.
The problem is, I don't know if I should take the "Gift" and let him bite me or not, and I'm at the point where I have to kill all my fellow members in the hideout.
I've got to make a decision, and I don't know if it's better to be a vampire, or if it's better to just stay a normal healthy Khajiit.

I need some advice from you veterans.

From a technical point of view... Oblivion vampires are not the most fun to play...
If I had no vampire mods, I would honestly say no.

I would say no. You barely get anything good out it. When I became a vampire i totally regret it. I couldn't walk outside during the day which i really liked so I never became a vampire ever again

Being a vampire really limits what quests you can do if you haven't done them before your transformation. As well, the more days you've gone without feeding, the stronger you become, but you also become weaker to the sunlight, which means stepping out into the day for even a second is horribly poisonous to you. As well, the longer you go, the more people hate you because it's OBVIOUS that you're not human by that point. Try selling things to people on day 3 of severe vampirism. It's not going to happen until you feed and make yourself statistically weak again.

The only perk to being a vampire is that you become much much stronger the longer you go without blood, but the cons outweigh the pros in my opinion.

If you expect to play the game with many characters many times, then go for it and evalutate it yourself.

If that is not the case and you only envision perhaps one play through, then I will join those above in recommending against it. Most try it and decide they don't care for it.

If you don't have any vampire mods, don't go for it. It's really kind of boring, and it doesn't really change your character all that much except people hate you if you don't svck blood, and then your guy barely is a vampire, that stat bonuses are low. Vanilla vampirism is definitely not the best thing in the world.

It seems to me that this is the perfect time to make a "special savegame," and try it out. Then you'll have two different "branches" for your character, and you can always reload from that non-vampire point and continue from there.

I'd like to offer a different opinion and say that, while it's not a whole new unique experience like some people apparently expected, being a vampire can be really fun from a roleplaying perspective. There's a lot of things you can do with it and a lot of ways a character can react to receiving the dark gift. You could try to feed as much as possible and remain looking like your normal self, or you could never feed and grow stronger and become insane, all while avoiding society.

If you don't care about roleplaying and only care about gameplay, then it adds a new challenge to the game.

Be warned that if you are not the PC, or you are on the 360 and do not have the Vile Lair, or if you have the PS3 version (especially GOTY) then it is unlikely you will be able to cure your vampirism. The quest to do so is one of the buggiest things in the game. If you're on the PC, it is incredibly easy to cure yourself. If you have the Vile Lair, it is also very simple. If not, you might be stuck being a vampire forever.

My Mages character was intended to be a good guy.

He always had a powerful spell, "Metal Fail." It unleashed a shockwave that killed about everybody it hit.

Then, he became a Vampire. He was Arch Mage, so he tended to wander from city to city. He got attacked by Guards, and got cornered. He only had enough magicka for Metal fail, and the Leyawiin Mages Guild was at him too.

Now he's suspended, lost 19 Daedra hearts, and has no money, and no potions.

Sound nice?

I've held off on posting to this topic. To think about how to respond, without going into too much detail.

Pending on my character, I like being a vampire...A LOT. As Velorien stated, It adds a new strategy to gameplay. It's like a hardcoe element. You need to feed. Finding vics is not that difficult. I see where a lot of people might find it a pain in the ass to deal with, but if you plan yourself acordingly, it can be fun. The perks are welcomed, as far as I'm concerned. You gain access to the Skill tree, at the spellmaking alter, for one.

If you have the right RPing in mind, it's great. Take glargg's advice and save. It either works for you or it doesn't.

Now...Go with Sithis...

@ SE 09 : I don't know what happened to your guy. I've played a vamp several times, and NEVER been randomly attacked, in ANY playthrough.

Welcome to the forums, Legend Wo1f :)

Good luck with your vampire, should you choose to let him become one that is.

Well, I personally love vampire characters, and had one for the first playthrough but cured him later on due to the obvious drawbacks. Perhaps make him one at a later stage in this playthrough (there are other ways to contract vampirism). There is a cure though, just so you know.

I didn't get a fishy stick. I came here a little over a week ago. I can't even buy REAL fishsticks.

That's what I did for mine, and I decided that I didn't like it. I hadn't really lost much by reloading. If you want to try it out, it's good to satisfy curiosity, but in my opinion vampirism in this game isn't really so great.

I think this is solid advice.

Tbh i think i got it from a dungeon on my first playthrough, cant quite recall where but if im honest i didnt even realise 'til people started refusing to buy from and sell to me. The cons really do outweigh the pro's, but as glargg said make a save and see what you think. Thats what OB is all about to me, treating it differently with each playthrough.

If you're planning to play through it again then I would wait for the next time around. As a beginner the limitations are probably going to be more trouble than they're worth. It's easier to be a vampire when you've got to know your way around the game a little bit.

Certainly more responses than I imagined getting on this topic. ^_^ Thanks y'all

It sounds a bit as if the curse adds a sort of hardcoe mode, which isn't all that bad. New Vegas' hardcoe mode sounds kind of similar, and I thought it was pretty fun.
The overall "noooooo" to vamparism, as well as the super important knowledge of a death dealing sun weigh in heavy. How I do luv de sun an teh purty flers. :(

By your guidance, I will dupe the save and see how I manage. If the curse proves to be over-problematic, then I shall wait until my second playthough to become a hunter of the night. I must first learn the land and the secrets it holds, so that I may be better equipped in the future.
... Now, if the chance were given to be a werewolf, then I'd prolly take the curse without a second thought.

I'm with you on the werewolf thing, that would be crazy. As i believe someone already mentioned if you're playing on PC you shouldn't have any issues in curing your 'desiese' i'm not sure on Xbox but for sure on PS3 you will struggle to be cured. I did find a solution to the problem, i cant recall where, but i can recall exactly what you need to do. Should you come across this problem i'm sure myself or any number of people will be able to get the info to you.
