Help with Gold not showing in inventory...

Post » Wed May 23, 2012 8:23 am

Hi. I have a problem with my inventory. More specifically my gold is gone.

I was playing along and I had around 22,000 gold. I had gone to the city where the guard asks you for money to enter and I noticed that I couldn't pay/bribe him. At first I didn't care because I had been using persuade on everybody. But... the next time I went into a shop I noticed that I didn't have any gold in my inventory (under misc or anywhere). It showed my gold in the bottom right corner of the screen and I could buy/sell items to vendors, but I couldn't interact with any NPC's that require gold to be in your inventory. (Can't buy/upgrade houses, can't bribe guards, etc.)

This posed two problems, 1. I couldn't buy the house that had the gem in it to finish a quest for the guild. (The door shows that I need a key, I can't pick it. But I can't buy the house. Therefore, that quest is kaput, done, unplayable.) 2. I acidently froze an npc when I put my controller down to get some snacks and another ripit energy drink. This automatically caused bounty, that I can't get rid of because the gaurds don't realize that I can just pay. I can only go to jail or fight them. Not good at all, if I fight them I wouldn't be able to do any more quests in that hold because from then on, any time I came into the area, the guards would instantly attack me. So anytime I did anyhting that gets bounty, I would have had to reload from my last save. grrrr, that svcks to try to play the entire game without EVER doing ANYTHING that could possibly end up getting the guards to chase me.

Oh, but it gets worse...

I found out that it not only affected my CURRENT save, it also stripped the gold from inventory in ALL of the previous saves too. Then some kid tells me he fixed his gold glitch by deleting all of his saves and starting a new game. (I know this next part is my fault...) I deleted all of the Skyrim stuff from my PS3's Saved Data Utility and started a new game... Only to follow Hadvar into the keep and have him cut the bindings off of my hands and... I have no (insert favorite curse word here) gold in my inventory!!! I went over to this table and picked up 4 gold and nothing in inventory (except my footwraps and roughspun tunic under apparel)... It shows that I have 4 gold in the bottom right corner of the screen though. (carry weight 2/300 gold 4 and my health bar). I walked over to a treasure chest and opened it up (it was empty) and when I go to put something in it, My gold is there in inventory (under misc) and my clothes (under apparel). So I can store it, spend it, etc. But it only shows in inventory if I am going to store it in something. I tried putting three gold in the treasue chest and keeping one gold on me. OK, now it shows nothing in inventory except my footwraps and my roughspun tunic but the chest has three gold in it. I take the three gold out and now I'm back to having 4 gold, (again showing in the bottom right corner, but not in my inventory... anywhere.)

So this glitch not only affects CURRENT and PAST saves, it affects all FUTURE saves too.

No need to even start playing again because I already know that I can't finish the game unless this gold glitch is fixed. I feel like I wasted 80 dollars on this game. (Yeah, I bought the guide book for 20 dollars when I got the game, so 60 on the game and 20 for the book.)

Can anybody help or have they experienced the same thing?

Side Note... This was BEFORE the patch. Last time I started the game it downloaded and installed the patch, but the gold glitch remains.

Have you tried to re-install the game and patch? If it affects all your characters that's the only solution I can think of.
When you reinstall the data make sure it completes install before you start new game or load a save(It continiues installation past the Install screen) to make sure nothing else goes wrong.

Yeah. The problem I ran into is I don't know how to completely uninstall the game from the PS3. I went into the Saved Data Utility and deleted anything associated with Skyrim, and put the disc in and started a new game. The load option was not available so it started with me riding in the back of a wagon, progressed to me making and naming a character etc. The gold glitch is still there.

Edit: I am now getting rid of everything in the Saved Data Utility AND the Game Data Utility. Gonna delete the patch also...

Shouldn't need to touch Save data Utility just Game Data Utility. Skyrim install is in there as well as the patch.

Well, I uninstalled then reinstalled the game but still no gold in my inventory. Maybe I'll give it a shot anyway. I can at least play it through the Golden Claw quest in Riverwood. I'm not for sure what to do after that though.

Anathoth and XsCode have both had the same problem. But we all were doing different things when it happened (and it also happened on different platforms).

Anathoth, quoted text - "I was outfitting my house in Whiterun via the Jarl's steward, and the 11k in gold I had abruptly ceased to be visible in my inventory. It's still there in that I can use it to purchase items in shops, and it displays the gold amount when I bring my inventory up, but it isn't visible with the other items in my inventory itself. The dialog box for further house upgrades with the steward doesn't display, as it behaves as if I in fact have no gold.

After this happened with one character, upon checking, I noticed it has in fact also now happened to all characters from all saves on my system. Gold is there, but not among my inventory items.

I had been using the glitch for obtaining house furnishings from the steward for free when it happened. Anyone else experience this? I've used the glitch to obtain or furnish the Whiterun house twice previously, without issue.

Perhaps the steward doesn't take kindly to being fleeced after all.."

XsCode, quoted text - "My gold disappeared right after I finished the "escape from Cidhna mine" quest. The amount shows in the menu at the bottom, but not the actual "item" itself.

I can still buy from traders, but anything thats done from a conversation menu, bribe, invest etc. is not available anymore. Confirmed that all my previous saved games now have the same issue.

Playing on PC... no glitches or cheats used. Need HELP PLEASE...
"

Hopefully somebody can figure this bug/glitch out.

Did you reinstall the game and download the patch? If you did, reinstall the game again and hit Circle when it asks you to patch. You'l have to deal with the lag, but then atleast you will have money.

So has doppelganger, quoted text - "The amount of gold I possess can still be seen in the lower right corner of the main menu, but it isn't recognized by the shopkeepers or by the stewards. This means I can't buy houses, furniture, weapons, armors, potions, spell tomes...nothing at all. There is also the issue of the missing dialogue which may be even more of a problem."

edit - Maybe I should try to get enough people together to show that this is more than a one time glitch on a single platform?

klownshewz, Yeah, I've tried uninstalling then reinstalling and starting over without the patch, uninstalling then reinstalling and starting over with the patch. Same thing. No gold in inventory. The only time it worked correctly was on the very first install. Another guy I found online suggested a radical approach and told me that if it was that important, I could try reformatting my hard drive by starting the PS3 in safe mode and then -

Restore PS3 System - IMPORTANT: All data and settings will be lost by performing this step.
This will reformat the hard drive on the PlayStation 3, deleting all data and restoring it to as if it just came out of the box. This is the same as [Restore PS3 system] on the XMB.

BUT HE COULD NOT GUARANTEE THAT REFORMATTING THE DRIVE WOULD WORK.

WOW. This game is NOT that important.

I know. It was more of a rhetorical question.

NeonRTDreams, I don't know if you've read this already, but Schizoid Man posted a possible solution in my thread. I haven't tried it yet, but will do as soon as possible. Hope it works for you.

The red items from a companion is a bug/glitch that seems to have always been in the game and still is after 1.4 though not as prolific now.

I have never heard of it happening with coins before but often armour and weapons taken from a companion would turn red as if stolen, also they would not show up in your inventory if you tried to sell them.

The way round it is to take all the dodgy items (in this case your coins) from your companion and place them in an empty container in your house (I always use breezehome) then tell you companion to “take all from the container” then you take all the items back from your companion which should then force them to lose their stolen status and you can proceed to sell or do what you want with them.

Give it a try as it might work with your coins.

As far as I know this doesn’t work for items that are really stolen.

Hope you manage to resolve the issue as it must be a real pain.

I have sent emails and attempted to contact Bethesda support, but nothing back so far. lol, after reading and digging around on the forums I can only assume that it is going to be a while before they get back to me, if they get back to me at all.

I saw that fix for red items (items showing up as stolen). Unfortunately none of my stuff shows up red, the only thing that has been affected is my money is gone out of inventory, it doesn't show up at all, even in new games. I guess it would be diferent if it showed up as stolen, at least then it would show up.

On my original first character (lvl 24 with around 22,000 gold, until the gold went missing and I... Doh!... deleted him) I had a couple of items that showed up as stolen but I had a follower (Faendal at that particular time) and I gave the items to him, dismissed him and took on a new follower from the college. (I actually liked the mage follower better than the archer, I forgot her name though.) Later on I wanted a fighter to follow me so I dismissed the mage and went to pick up Lydia. Along the way I went through Riverwood so I told Faendal to follow me and when I got the stuff out of his inventory it wasn't red anymore. So I sold it off at the Riverwood trader. I left Faendal with an upgraded bow, an imperial sword, a full set of leather armor (armor, bracers, boots, and helmet) and a hide shield. I liked to leave the NPC's equipped so if I needed to snag one, they would already be... well... ready. No fast traveling or outfitting, just a "Hey, you, come with me," kinda thing. Besides, I figured if I ever needed to sell stolen goods I would just up that skill, invest in a shop so I could sell off any ill-gotten gains. I didn't worry about it to much. But, I had gold at that time. It wasn't until later that the gold dissappeared from my inventory.

After buying decor fo my Solitude house my gold disappeared from inventory. I can still buy from merchants. It reappeared for a while and now is gone after buying decor for Riften house. I haven't checked to see if I can bride guards yet though.

Edit: So here's where I'm at with this bug.

Loaded save before buying Solitude house - Gold is there in inventory; I exit game and reboot system, restart game - latest save still has gold missing so I load save before buying Solitude house again and now - Gold is gone.

I start loading previous saves before that one to see if it was missing as has happened to others - Gold missing from all previous saves I checked.

I exit game, reboot system, delete game data, reboot system, reload game and patch, systematically start checking saves starting with one I had not opened before reinstalling game - Gold still missing from inventory in all saves.

Finally, out of frutrated curiosity I load the first autosave at character creation and play until my bindings are cut off. Check inventory - Gold not showing.

Somehow the game data gets corrupted by the game save file and then corrupts every file you open after that. This is a nasty bug!

Is there a game cache on the PS3 that is hidden and deleteable that saves data for the game?

Tried to find out about "hidden" game caches on PS3 that could be causing this bug. An idea for some other game that worked to fix a similar problem it was having was to insert the disk from another game and load a save from that game. It appearantly is supposed to clear a cache that all games use on the PS3 so by changing games you would clear it of Skyrim info altogether. It worked for that game at least.

It did not work for Skyrim.

I can report that I am still getting dialog options involving gold even though none shows in inventory and can still buy and sell. I guess I'll proceed 'cuz I really love the game but really do not want to delete everything and try starting over for the fourth time since 11-11-11 (which seems not to have helped some anyway).

I might be finally throwing in the towel with this glitch.

I have to say with 40 years of gaming under my belt this is the first time I really feel cheated by a game company and there were some really bad games and companies, in the past. While I have felt like boycotting a company's games after a bad experience, I never have. This may be the company and game that does it for me.

I have played Beth's games for months at a time and replayed all of them many times, but this one takes all the fun away by crushing you over and over; bug after bug.

I toss out hours of play using an older save to avoid one bug only to get smacked down again 20 hours later by another. Three steps back - one step forward. I feel dismal.

After stopping play for three weeks to wait for patch 1.4 and then to have this happen, well all I can say to Bethesda is, too many broken promises and to much broken trust.

I'm really hoping I can continue play with this bug, but if it finally stops me I am done with this game and probably Bethesda too.

I am a person who believes in second, third, and fourth chances and the only things that really turn me off about people or companies is lying and stealing. It is hard for me not to feel that Bethesda hasn't done both to me as a PS3 user (especailly after recent revelations from Mr. Howard).

I am not ranting nor am I asking Beth to make it right for me. I am dejected and I am trying to emote my pain to them. I hope Gstaff and company read this and feel my pain. I am sure they work hard at their jobs like most of us do and that they want to add to peoples lives through the games they create. I just would like them to know that the choices that they have made have taken something from my life. It is my hope that during the next game developement cycle they make better choices.

I was doing just fine with my game until I read this post yesterday.lol Now my gold isn't showing up in my inventory. I was at 9,000 at the time. Then I received 20,000 for a Dark Brotherhood contract, which the gold had then reappeared for a short time. I fast traveled and then the gold disappeared from my inventory, but still shows that I have 29,000 total. I haven't tried to buy a home or or pay a bounty yet. I was able to furnish the Dawnstar Sanctuary through Delvin Mallory in Riften though. The only home I own is the Breezehome and that was purchased at the beginning of the game. I'm unsure as to why gold is even listed in your inventory,as I feel that it shouldn't. But if it not being there prevents doing things in-game,then it presents a problem. Its always annoyed me that your currency is listed in all of Bethesda's games as sometimes,I accidentally drop it or store it somewhere. But in this case,it just disappeared.

Just to add some more info to my previous post; All of the files where the gold has diaappeared from inventory (which is all now) have dropped in size around 400kb. It actaully makes me wonder if it was some sort of timed script improvement to help the file size/lag problems. (Timed as in so many game days)

Who knows, maybe "seeing" your gold in the inventory was the glitch and having it be removed is the fix.

"Who knows, maybe "seeing" your gold in the inventory was the glitch and having it be removed is the fix." - lol

Yeah, I've tried about everything that I know of also. I played Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3 and they were both completely fine on my system. Came back to Skyrim, just hoping, and nope, no joy. (Or rather, no gold.) (cache problem was a good idea though.)

It is weird that the glitch STAYS, even after completely deleting all Skyrim stuff/files off of my PS3 that I can find. (Granted, the only two places that I know to look is in the Saved Data Utility and the Game Data Utility.) If anybody know of anywhere else to look please let me know. As mentioned, it seems to corrupt all current, past, and future saves.

I've got about 30GB of space left on my hard drive, so it's not a space issue. My save files weren't overly big (especially compared to some of the file sizes that have been reported in the forums).

I had the problem before the 1.4 fix, and I've still got it. (I was hoping that somehow the 1.4 patch would fix it.)

Also, as mentioned, I am not going to reset my PS3 back to factory specs by reformatting it. I don't have a lot of music, pics, etc. but I do have some other games on there that I would like to keep my progress on. My only other options at this point have included 1. Borrowing my friends PS3 and putting Skyrim on it to see what happens, and if the gold is there, maybe I could transfer the "good" Skyrim back to my PS3, or, 2. I had considered upgrading my hard drive to an SSD drive anyway. Which means, I should be able to keep the old drive and/or transfer any data that I wanted from the old to the new (I would just have to make sure that I only transferred the stuff that I wanted, meaning NOTHING involving Skyrim off of the old drive, lest it bring the bug/glitch with it.)

Trainwrecker101 - Yeah, I know exactly what you mean (starting over again and again because I can't complete a quest so I lost many hours of gameplay just reverting back to an older save, feeling like the bugs and glitches have taken all of the fun out of the game, etc.) and I did not want to have some knee-jerk reaction to something that could hopefully be fixed . I've gotten mad at games before, yelled at the tv, yelled that they were cheating, yelled that I got ripped off, etc. But Skyrim was really the first time that I was... as you put it... dejected. Or maybe in the end, just really disappointed. As I posted elsewhere -

Topic: Can I now recommend skyrim to a ps3 owner ?

With all of the issues with the XBox/PS3 right now I would say no. Get tthe PC version if at all possible becasue at least the PC version has "console commands" and you can right some of the wrongs that Bethesda has shipped this game with. (For Example, when you have to create items becasue you dropped/sold/couldn't find the item because of a glitch. Or times when you have to bring somebody back.) If had known then what I know now, I would have NEVER bought the PS3 version of this game. AND... a lot of stores (Wal-Mart) WILL NOT take a game back becasue of bugs/glitches. At best they will let you exchange it. (They don't want people buying a game, "beating" it, then bringing it back for a refund.) Bethesda's take on it is, "I've got your money. Don't like it? Just return it to where you purchased it." Problem is, most of the time you can't. I know, I just tried to return this junk game and I can't, so I am out 80 dollars, (60 dollars for the game and 20 dollars for the game guide).

Don't get me wrong, I really really really wanted to like this game. Scratch that, I TRIED FOR WEEKS to really like this game. I just can't. Too may glitches/bugs, if I hadn't seen this with my own eyes, I wouldn't have believed it. This last one made my game on the PS3 UNPLAYABLE and this last go 'round of patches didn't fix it (for me at least).

That's how I feel too. I was having problems with FNV and never finished it because it was so annoying and not fun to play with the problems. So I never bothered with any of the DLC.

This is where I'm headed with Skyrim. Too bad , so sad.

UPDATE -

"I had gone to the city where the guard asks you for money to enter and I noticed that I couldn't pay/bribe him." - That was Riften.

Well, I got a hold of a new hard drive, a Corsair Force Series GT (CSSD-F120GBGT-BK 2.5") 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) for about $170.

I installed the new drive and I didn't transfer anything over to it, if I need anything off of my old drive, I still have it if I need it.

1. I installed the game/game patch and started a new game. I can pay off guards if I do something wrong, I could pay the guard to get in to Riften, so this suggests that I now have the dialog options back involving NPC's and gold. I would assume that when I get enough money I will be able to buy houses etc. and I can't think of why not, according to these first NPC's dialog options, they know that I have gold now. After trying these to see if they worked I made a new character (I'm not going to pay that guard to get into Riften and I didn't want to start with a new character having assaults, lost gold, etc. Besides, my first character is almost always a "good" character anyway. My second character though, mwa ha ha haaa).

2. The game screens and stuff in the XMB load a little bit faster (that was expected) and the game does seem to run better. NOTE: I did not state that the graphics were actually different, just that it seemed to help with stuff like pop in and the game seems to be running more smoothly. Granted, I only have about four hours in on the new character so I don't know if it will help stutter/lag issues or not in the long run. But as of right now, the game runs excellent. I might wait for a bit before I get to far into it because I want to see what is in the next patch and I don't want to be continually deleteing or reinstalling or starting over.

When I started my new character,
1. I turned all autosave's off and disabled that last one
2. At the start of the game it will automatically create and save in the first slot (referred to as the "prisoner save").
3. I created manual saves in a new slots and use only those slots from that point on. (I know that if you save over the first slot, the prisoner save slot, then create a new character it will save the new character in the first slot automatically. Therefore "earasing" your "old" character.)

Just thought that this might help somebody in a similar situation.

edit - I have also posted this answer in another topic because I thought it pertained to both topics and could help in both instances.

Glad you have your gold back.

I still have no gold, but I haven't had any dialog glitches because of it yet.

Return to V - Skyrim
