Help with House Build Using Riften Kit

Post » Sun Nov 18, 2012 4:42 pm

I am trying to build a Riften House from scratch, but I can't seem to find house doors in the Riften Set of architecture.

I am using the kit RifRmSmFirstWall01, i am also using the RifRmSmBase kit, as well as the RifRmSmSecond, I am making a basemant, first floor, and second floor, but I don't see anyway to setup an outside door to link to the outside.

The only doors I see are under the RifRmSmPartitionDoor, there is a basemant and first, however, these do link up or match with the walls I'm using also these are just openings not really doors.

I cannot remember the name of it off the top of my head, but I know the doorway is a seperate piece that can be placed anywhere along a wall. If you have a look in one of the vanilla riften interiors, you'll find it in there

yeah I think I will have to do that, It's weird why it would not have a definitive door under the riften package, I mean I'm only looking under the riften package in Static Objects if its somewhere else that would be why I'm not seeing it.

I also build the roof on top of the second floor and it looks like it's lining up however, I used a roofwindow and it is just open, I will have to test the house in game but it definitely looks weird

Are load doors listed under static?

no but I need a wall with a spot for a door before I can place a load door, the only walls I see are partition walls

also do I have to place windows on the eves of the roof, it's just black triangles is that how its supposed to be?

Like I said before, it's a standalone doorway piece that can be placeed on any wall. Just have a look in any vanilla riften interior and you'll find it straight away. The tavern uses it twice (one on the side wall and one in a corner).

I understand your confusion because I went through the same when I was using that kit. Before I let my frustration boil, I thought to myself "how did the devs do it?"

yeah I just took a look at honeyside and bee and barb, I know what door that is and where to find it lol, it's just how they get it to sit out like the way they do, will be a little difficult, the roofs are a little screwy too, in vanilla riften, there are no open windows or open eves in the roof, so the way mine is it is definitely not correct, maybe I should have chose another kit that had more options, but it seems like riften has some corky options

Ah now I was battling with the Riften kit last night and it took me ages to sort out door placement (and was on the verge of posting this exact same thread!) It was the interiors I was having issues with (I am making an interior with the Riften kit that uses both internal door partitions, and load doors to other cells), after a bit of googling (not very productive, most of the info out there focuses on Nordic ruins) and a lot of fiddling about in the CK (more productive overall, but with lots of swearing and use of the 'undo' feature) I was able to get things looking the way I wanted them to.

The thing I found is that the snap-to-grid feature which is in general very handy when placing architectural parts, seems to be of very little use when placing Riften doors (or maybe I have the grid set wrong, but I found 85 good for placing Riften walls and floors, not so good for Riften partitions and doors however) - your best bet is to toggle off the snap-to-grid and place doors manually, using the edit dialogue box (right-click on the selected piece and click edit to bring up the box) if necessary to adjust the co-ordinates in small increments so that the door is in the exact place you want it, with the correct amount of door 'sitting out' as you put it. Make use of the Riften vertical wood beam pillars if you are doing something at a slightly odd angle or you find there is a slight gap between where you are using partitions/doorway partitions and proper walls.

I was messing around with Riften doors for hours last night and for me as a beginner they are not the easiest to place correctly, so I feel your pain! I got there eventually (I think!!!!) by trial and error, lots of camera panning to different angles, and moving the door very small increments at a time using the x,y,z co-ords in the edit box.

If you work out anything about the roof space/eaves/beams, let me know - I haven't tackled that yet.

Edit: Because I didn't say it in my post, just pick the Riften load door of your choice and place it on any wall - the animation only opens it a tiny amount, so you can place it on a solid wall piece, just make sure it is placed slightly proud (jutting out) from the wall to ensure that the door animation doesn't clip with the wall behind it for the split-second that you see it in game when using the door. Internal/partition doors leading to a different part of the same cell need to have a proper doorway because they open fully, load doors only have a small opening animation so can go on any solid wall, just bring it out a couple of mm from the wall.

well thats the way I have it right now, it's just sitting a bit out from the wall, but it looks awful because you can see the sides, I need to find the frame that they use in the riften house, I still have yet to find it, or find its parts to combine it.

As far as the roof goes, my house is giant, I determined that it wouldn't be best to be adding eves, so I just took the mid ceiling tiles and used a flat ceiling, it looks just as good, I have a decent master bedroom, housecarl room, smithing room, basemant bar (still got to figure out how to set up the meadactivator), The kitchen is decent, and the stair look pretty nice. There is a lot of open space, I'm bad at visualizing space when building houses, I used to play the sims a long time ago and do the same thing, I build these giant frames using walls, and then my rooms are giant and I can't think of ideas to fill the space, I downloaded some mod houses from Nexus and did a walkthrough of them to compare, everything is so tight and detailed, I just think like how they start out and keep it simple and small, yet make everything look so good.

I'm wishing now that I didn't go with the Riften Kit, but I am trying to keep with the farmhouse, riften house theme as I am trying to build a house on the lake by Riften, but I want it to be out of the mountain overlooking the lake.

I'm out of ideas, I can't keep filling space with bookshelves and cupboards that just gets lame, I wish I could share like a partial file with someone have them walkthrough it using the console commands and get their input that would be helpful and also might help add some nice touches to the house

Have you looked at any modders resource packs? There are some good packs knocking about that are great for decorating a home.

It is difficult to achieve a comfortable, lived-in feel to a place - it's easy enough to bash some walls and floors together, it's being creative and making it feel like a home that is the difficult part IMO! I feel as though am getting to grips with the Riften kit after a lot of initial frustration, there are a few wooden upright beam pieces in that kit that you can place either side of a door which IMO make it look a bit more attractive if you don't want a door just in the middle of a wall, although lining them up correctly can be a bit of a pain - it's worth the effort to play around with them IMO, find a look that suits what you want to create and make your doorway a nice feature.

My first attempt went wrong because I started with a shell of walls and floor, then found it difficult to fill up in an attractive and practical way, didn't help that I'd accidentally made a cavernous space! This attempt is going better because I did more planning beforehand in terms of working out what I wanted to have in each room, then put down some floor pieces, arranged my furniture/crafting stations/containers etc. on them with a general idea of room shape/size, then built the walls afterwards to fit what I'd put in the room - it helps that I'm not using an exterior, because I don't have to fit the interior to any particular shape, and it also helps that I'm just doing this for my own use, I'm not going to be losing any sleep over whether other people think I put my alchemy table in the best place or that my rugs and banners are a poor design choice, iykwim!

Anyway, it's good to chat with someone who is in a similar situation to me when it comes to home-building, it's encouraging to find I am not the only one struggling with Riften's doors and making good decorative choices!

I here ya! A lot of people have built houses and it's just a lot of repetitiveness and it gets boring, its a way to get a lot of different containers/mannequins/plaques but it just feels like it gets to a point where it doesn't feel like a house.

I think where I went wrong was placing like 6 different wall tiles for one wall making a bend putting another 4 wall tiles, another turn dropping down another 7 wall tiles finally turning back toward the middle extending out another 6 wall tiles, then turning back on the final wall which is like 15 tiles long, its just like a huge flat room, then I look to one corner and I'm like oh the kitchen could go here and then what goes in the whole rest of the space on the first floor you know I get stuck. Obviously my bedrooms are upstairs but that is another huge space in itself, I tried to keep the crafting stations in the basemant but again its a monstrous space, hah I almost want to start again

If I make all these bends and turns in my interior, does my exterior have to match perfectly? I was under the impression that as long as I linked the doors it wouldn't matter...

How's it going abice?

I pretty much finished my alchemy area today, I have an empty corner that needs a bit of tlc but I am thinking of putting a small table and a couple of chairs there and some idle markers, so that it can be a space for followers who are still in-tow to do something while I am using the alchemy table (not that I'll get to see it in game if I'm at the alchemy table, but it's about the idea of them having somewhere to sit whilst I'm busy if that makes any sense!) I'm going to move onto the enchanting area and come back to that when I feel a bit more inspired. I found that my alchemy and enchanting areas are better off being really small, even though I am a hoarder and have added loads of labelled containers so that I can subdivide my alchemy ingredients and potions to my hearts content, it still doesn't need that much space. I initially allowed 2x3 Riften floor pieces for the alchemy area, then shrank it to 2x2, and I still have that corner to fill!
