Hitchhiking

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 3:57 pm

Oh cool. :) I'd like to go hitch hiking when I finish school.

I agree with everyone else, 3 people might be a bit of a turn off for a potential picker uperer. Have you considered buses or trains, I'm sure you can get to Croatia from UK using those means of transportation.

Have fun!

Probably a bad idea.
Hitchhiking is a great way to end up dead or a hostage. You should use public or private transportation instead.

I don't want to be a downer... But I believe these people are right. The only time I hitched a ride was from a girl that took me and my roommate back to the dorms. I felt really awkward about it and that was just a simple matter. I wish you great luck on your adventure!

Just be careful and always be packing...

Hitchiking is nowhere near as glorious as it may seem. I'd recommend using public transports and just walking and cycling.

my dad has told me a few tales about the times he hitchhiked. he used to hold a sign offering to share his cocaine for a ride, once getting in the car he would stall as long as he could before the driver realized my father had absolutely no intention of sharing his cocaine.

then repeat the process until he got where he wanted to go, or close... or ended up further away.

Traditional payments for hitchhicking in my day; ass, gas or grass.

Depending on the driver, I'd just make sure you have enough gas money

Sup baby, I'll take you for a ride if you ride me. :hubbahubba:

Wait, you're a man? Well.....just don't make noise. :hubbahubba:

Serious response: I'd never consider hitchhiking unarmed, knife or gun. Seriously, world is full of terrible people.

I agree,
I only hitchhiked once in my life and I was with a friend. We were about 18 or 19 at the time. However the trucker that picked us up was creepy and paranoid along with being a major religious fanatic, the creepy kind of one. I mean we were both street punks and partiers and had been in situations and fights ourselves. But it is much scarier when you are not in control and someone like this is your only way of either getting where your going or being dumped on the highway out in the desert somewhere..... I grew up around Cali and AZ, alot of desert in between...lol

Lucky someone didnt get squirrelly and try to take it from him or worse. people tend not to be to friendly when they figure out they are being strung along or BSed too.

I've picked up a few hitchhikers. None of which will ever do it again.

But seriously the cross-Europe trip is a great idea (plenty o' culture and beautiful countryside to see there), though I'd strongly recommend you rent a car or something. If not then ride bikes (provided you're going in the summer which I assume you are). But then again, I'm take a pretty negative stand on hitchhiking.

Remember, if you want get anywhere, you gotta' follow the unwritten Book of the Road. And the first page of it is this: you have to give the driver a little...incentive.

Most people are suitably impressed by gifts of pie. If they're not, you know they're trouble.

Oh, I'm impressed by pie, but not the hitchhikers. They always scream in horror when I mention they're going to be a part of my meat pies. I find it's best to invite them, and offer them a 'special drink'. :whistling:

The Australian folklore of hitchhiking makes me glad I've never been in that position.

Is this some kind of challenge or something, seeing as you're going for charity aswell?
Not really officially although we've made it into a challenge by booking our flights already. Meaning that we have to make it to Croatia within 8 days in order to catch out flights. It's actually part of a charity called Link Community Development, who set up Hitchhiking trips every year to Morocco and another random destination (this year it's Croatia).
3 people is a bit of a crowd. You're probably less likely to get rides with that many people.
This, aside from spending too much money is probably my biggest worry. I do understand that two is a far better number to attempt this with, but since we are leaving on Monday, there isn't really much we can do short of leaving someone alone to try and rectify this. We're just going to have to do the best we can and hope for bigger vehicles to take us or like you suggest, use public transport.
Have you ever seen hostel?
I haven't actually, although it was suggested by a friend of mine the minute I mentioned my little trip. Safe to say I think I'd rather watch it once I return safely from my trip. Although I think starting this thread has worried me ever so slightly. :P

Not illegal, but you'd have to be crazy to try it after http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_Milat_%28serial_killer%29 went down.

This. Isn't Croatia in a civil war? And if it's not what difference does it make? It's a war torn country. If your seriously going to go through with this, get a gun...or an rpg.
