Hjerim - house purchase depite quest bug -

Post » Sun May 27, 2012 10:35 am

While we await for the real patch (or at least the CS), I thought I'd post this little tip here for those who, like me, had to use cheats to purchase the house in Windhelm as Jorleif wouldn't sell it and the Blood on the Ice quest wouldn't trigger (after checking with skyrim viewer, the quest seems to contain several events that can prevent it from triggering).

I noticed that the recommended way to delete the cobwebs and the old funiture is to use the "Markfordelete function. This requires lots of patience and trial and error. Instead, it's much easier, less time consuming and safer to simply delete the parentref of the said objects: open the console and type "df495.disable" (without quotes). The house also looks much cleaner than with the markanddelete function as it also gets rid of the mist and some other effects.

The above is applicable after purchasing the house via cheats - console commands: "setstage a7b33 10" "completequest ms11" "completequest ms11b"and then purchasing the upgrades from jorleif (make sure you purchase the "clean the mess" upgrade before all the others).

If you didn't purchase the "cleaning" upgrade first: type "df492.disable" : this will get rid of the bloody mess.

(the getparentref console command can be priceless to find the parent object controlling the status of the children objects ;) )

To remove the "Investigation targets":

Near the bloody chest: d55f2.disable
Near bottles and broken glass: d5625.disable
Near the pots in the kitchen: d5662.disable
Near the altar with skeleton: d57f6.disable
Front of wardrobe with hidden door: d57ef.disable
In the upstairs bedroom: d57f7.disable
Near the small bookcase with the butcher leaflets: d572c.disable
Near the other wardrobe and the small bookcase: d57c7.disable

Also, I noticed that the dialog with Jorleif to add furniture to the small room which is almost in front of the master bedroom in the Windhelm house was also not showing up in my game. If you have the same problem, open the console and type:

df496.enable
df497.enable

Edit: apparently getting the housecarl fixes this last issue with the "guestroom" but I'm leaving the codes just in case..

Bump bump bump. This is fantastic information. I don't know how it didn't get any attention when it was first posted.

The one problem that still needs resolving though is how to clear those "Investigate - InvestigationTarget" prompts that occur all over the place. If we can just figure that out the place will be perfectly normal. Anybody have any leads on that?

Any update on removing the InvestigationTargets? At least one gets in the way of activating a bookcase...

I had no problem on the PC with this quest. I even went completely out of turn, didn't even find the amulet or anything. I was surpised when the dialog with Jorleif, where you implicate the court Wizard, stated something about an amulet... that I didn't have. I ended up being able to purchase the house and all upgrades as well, including the cleanup.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the op?

I got the Blood on the Ice quest before having enough cash on hand to buy the house (Hjerim), so I waited to go back and buy it later. Now Jorleif doesn't even have the option to buy the house in his conversation menu. Did they change the conditions to buy the house in one of the patches or is it just bugged so you can only buy it right after completing the quest? I also wondered if the Strange Amulet ever get's named.

Howdy,

Frankly I don't know if I had the amulet or not, but I was given the quest & was working through Blood on Thin Ice & worked it to completion (I didn't investigate the crime scene). The option to purchase the house is not there. I'll save & try the console commands.

For some reason in all of my saves there is always blood and body parts left over in the house even after purchasing all of the upgrades.

Odd how I was able to enter the house using the key from some dead corpse...in the Shatter Shield home.

With the CS (or CK) it would be a matter of a few minutes (fixing the quest for real wouldn't be complicated either) but in the meantime, I suppose someone could check the contents of Hjerim using either FOMM or Skyrim Viewer to find the reference of the Investigation Targets (likely activators?). However it requires patience I do not have at this time as I have just spent 27 hours of the last 36 hours in small planes and airports and am flying again tomorrow for business...maybe...but just maybe I will look into it on Sunday if I am not too tired.

The house isn't available for sale after the Blood on the Ice quest - the player must progress in the Civil War questline until winning favor with the Jarl of Windhelm, which means completing the entire quest line for players who sided with the Imperials. After the Civil War questline the player will also be given the opportunity to become a Thane of Windhelm, at which point a housecarl will move in and the extra room will become populated.

Except that in many cases ( including mine) completing the entire civil war quest will still not allow you to purchase the house, no matter which side you chose: the Blood on the Ice quest will not trigger, no matter what you do (it's bugged, plain and simple) and the steward will keep mentioning that some unpleasantness happened and the dialog to purchase the house will never become available.

I actually did a 2nd playthrough on a different character, and never investigated the crime scene either. Hence I didn't get the option to ask the Steward to become the official investigator, and I still managed to complete The Butcher quest and was able to have the culprit arrested. BUT... I get no option to buy the house? Do you only get the option when you join the Stormcloaks?

FYI: found the codes to disable the "Investigation targets":

Near the bloody chest: d55f2.disable
Near bottles and broken glass: d5625.disable
Near the pots in the kitchen: d5662.disable
Near the altar with skeleton: d57f6.disable
Front of wardrobe with hidden door: d57ef.disable
In the upstairs bedroom: d57f7.disable
Near the small bookcase with the butcher leaflets: d572c.disable
Near the other wardrobe and the small bookcase: d57c7.disable

I don't think I am missing any. If so, the "investigation targets" can easily be found with FOMM: navigate to the Hjerim house cell (search for WindhelmHjerim to find it quickly ) and look for refs that are 88 bytes in size.

Can I get my cookie, now? :cookie:

Did you pay for the clean-up BEFORE you bought any upgrades?

I finished the murder investigation quest and I also got the legit option to purchase Hjerim. However, I didn't see any "cleaning" option, when I purchased the furniture upgrades. o.0

Thank you Toutatis for posting the codes. I'll just clean my house the manual way. LOL

Can't thank you enough for this easy and elegant fix!

Never got the Blood on the Ice quest to trigger, nor could I buy the house when it became available through the Stormcloak campaign.
Been playing with this house owned for about a week now, no problems beside the above mentioned investigate texts which are a small price to pay

Thanks again.

EDIT: Ah no more investigation targets I see. +1
