I just read this as well, its svcks, especially when you look at all the other lawsuites that have been filed by Saul Zaentz (whom I have never actually heard of before today, isn't he like 91 or something? lol)

But here's where I read mine at incase people want more on it (assuming they are even that different from eachother)

That's pathetic. The book it bases its ideas on is over 70 years old, but now some [censored]tards who own the rights to a movie made decades after that pub opened think they have the right to close it down. Copyright law is a [censored] joke.

Never mind mate Jesters and So:Bar will still be open.

I live right next to it and have never been in. But I do agree, that there is no need to take down the pub. It was there long before the movie was planned and it's unfair that it should be stripped of it's name because they can. What is it doing to harm the guy who is sueing? Nothing.

That's just dreadful. What is the point of that? Seems to me like it's just corporate bullying for its own sake rather than serving any useful purpose. It's particularly distasteful since the pub's name predates the litigators having "rights" to exclusive use of the name. I suppose what gets to me is that they don't seem to care that this sort of stuff is causing them and their ilk a PR nightmare.

"I can't fight Hollywood"

Makes me especially sad, the people with the most money are the ones who are most likely to win, simply because they have money. No sense of good will in the world anymore, everything is abou wealth. How would this harm the company anyway? The first thing that comes to people's minds with 'hobbit' is lotr or the books, not some pub in Southampton.

If it were just over the name, i'd agree. It would be fairly ridiculous. But if they're using imagery from the film trilogy on loyalty cards, etc. that's just asking for trouble.

This is just insane, the pub have existed for years. I don't see why some american [censored]tards would try to close it, they probably don't even give [censored] about Tolkien anyways. I can understand that they would complain about the use of imagery from the film trilogy, but appart from that they have no right (in my opinion, an opinion that seems to differ from copyright laws). It seems like such a nice place too, and it's not like they are hurting anyone, it's not like people won't watch the Hobbit because some english pub is named after it. I guess there's nothing they can do though as they don't have a mountain of money like hollywood has.

They should name the pub "[censored] the SZC", that should get some reactions.

I'm thinking split it into two words with a space.. the HOB BIT

And when people ask what the hell a 'HOB' is, they can say; "It's something that pisses off Hollywood." B)

That's true - they shouldn't be using anything from the movie without permission, but the Hobbit name should NOT be an issue - it is almost common usage now
