"Home" Town?

Post » Sun Sep 09, 2012 6:16 pm

So, once my data cap resets and I can finally re-d/l steam and the Skyrim patches, I'll be starting to play Skyrim again(as I indicated in another recent thread). Along with HOPEFULLY saluaging my Ranged Assassin from my old hard-drive, I'm thinking of starting a new character(not sure what class/race yet, though I do have an idea of how it'll be played), and I'm thinking I'll pick another city that will become my Home Town. With my RA, I just stuck with Whiterun, since it's the first major city you go to, and you defend from the
Spoiler
initial dragon attack and all that
.

That being said, I figured I'd come here and ask others what cities they often adopt as their "home-town", and reasons why.

Valton: The New Hold's city is quite sweet: http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120622112113/valtonthenewhold/images/7/78/ValtonLocation.jpg

:P

But hmm, I'd say Riften or Falkreth.

Breezehome is HOME... No matter where you go and how many homes you bought (or build :P)... Breezehome is home. It just looks so warm and snuggy...

I have an elven armor and gauntlet, scaled helmet and boots, set of skyforge steel sword and elven sword, and ah... the elven bow...right in the corner of Breezehome. Every time I enter the house, just seeing it there in a corner by the fire; just brought back new player memories of dungeon diving and running away as dragons burnt my ass off... Been through so much with that set

Thief = Breezehome. Close to the guild, easiest to get, a humble, comfy home
Stormcloak/Warrior = Hjerim - looks badass, with stone castle-like walls fit for an elite warrior
Dragonborn = Whiterun - the easiest to get, where you gain your reputation as dragonborn

"Come on down to Valton! We have Nightmares, insane Miner's, and the friendliest Black-Smith this side of Riverwood!"

@OP An assassin? If he/she/it is in the Dark Brotherhood, Falkreath could be a good choice.

Riften always felt like my own home. No matter where I go and how long I stay. I always want to back to my home (Riften).
That's funny cause I rarely stay in Honeyside. I prefer sleep in Bee and Barb than my own house.

I just love Dawnstar, it's a pretty nice haven to rest of your adventures. And the house I built there is pretty nifty :)

My Imperial Radam Knifh?gg's hometown is Solitude. As he is a great proponent for the Cyrodiilic Empire, the closeness to the heart of Imperial power in Skyrim suits him. The house is also the most expensive and exquisite in the whole province - certainly appealing to this southern snob rags-to-riches immigrant.

He has bases in other towns too, but they are all considered minor ones. If a house had been available in Falkreath, he might have lived there instead, as he loves the forest province. When the Hearthfire DLC is released for PC, we'll see if he gets his house in Falkreath Hold after all.

My Altmer Arcus' hometown is Windhelm. Not known as the friendliest place to outsiders, Arcus went here in hopes that his enemies wouldn't look for him here. He does not own a house, but instead is a regular at the Candlehearth Hall. You'll find him by following the trail of dead bodies and the piles of clutter he leaves on the ground.

However, this paranoid sociopath does not consider Windhelm to be his hometown in the same way Radam does with Solitude. He doesn't make friends with the locals, nor does he have drinks at the inn with them. He only seeks out others if they can offer him power, pleasure or sustenance.

White run because it's sunny and home to my brothers the companions, and solitude because I feel rich living there

Mostly whiterun. Center of skyrim, closest to everything, I like it.

It depends on the character. If it were me, it'd be Solitude. Beautiful architecture, the centre of military and political power, plenty of shops and an awesome festival. Not to mention its the only place to get the finest wine in Skyrim - San's Spiced Wine!

My current character, Sara, doesn't really have a home town. She keeps her things in her room in the College of Winterhold, but she spends a lot of time drifting between cities and towns. I suspect she'll make her home in the Pale once we're able to buy Hearthfire, though.

My Nord Battlemage, Agata, lives in Breezehome. She's the Thane of Whiterun, so she spends the majority of her time in Whiterun - one day a week fulfilling her duty in the Jarl's court, patrolling the roads, inspecting the Watchtowers, checking the security in Riverwood and Rorikstead, and so on.

My current character, Theryn, lives at the College at the moment, but his adventures have taken him to most of the cities. Out of the ones we've visited, Riften and Markarth are his favourites.

My personal favourite is Riften, mainly because of the surrounding area.

This.

Although if your mind is already set on making your home elsewhere, I say go to Riften. The hold has a beautiful scenery and Honeyside feels really cosy as the next best thing after Breezehome. Hjerim might also feel homely (provided that you don't get those creepy mannequins), but the city it's in is far less welcoming.

I just realised I've only ever purchased Breezehome and Hjerim. Don't know why that is - I'll make a point of trying them all out someday. I've still got so much left to do in this game...

With my current character and the Hearthfire add-on I'll be settling at Lakeview Manor. It's nice not to be in an already established settlement.

Whiterun. No reason other than because it's pretty central on the map, which makes it a strategic location, easy to get to from any of the other major locations. But once the main quest is complete Chadric will build himself a castle and city on and south of Lake Ilinalta.

Most of my characters are primarily travelers and don't have a home hold, but Eilonwy currently calls the Rift/Riften home. Though lately she has shown much interest in Markarth. Maybe 'stationing' herself there for a while would make for easier trips to the west one day.

Jelissa is Harbinger of the Companions and lives in Breezehome, but she also spends lots of time in Riften.

Sigyn joined the Stormcloaks early on, and has lived in Windhelm ever since. She owns houses in all the major cities, though.

Orfeo has the College of Winterhold as his homebase, but he really likes Markarth, so he hopes the Jarl lets him buy a house there soon.

Guess who was my first character? :P

Whiterun is home for me,not because it was the first hold that I could buy a house in as I lived in the wilderness for many months while I got the "exploring" out of my system but because Breezehome is just what I wanted in a home.Riften reminds me too much of Bravil,Windhelm is too old for my tastes,I get lost in Markarth and Solitude is too "Elitist"...Winterhold....not much left of that place so that's how I ended up marrying Lydia and buying Breezehome to allow her to open up shop and earn us a bit of change to live on while I putter around collecting ingredents and taking care of the occasional bandit or dragon attack as they pop up.What a life for the "Dragon-Born".......
