You have to have at least one child's bed and chest which have to be put in the children's wing.

You have to talk to Aventus Aretine on Windhelm to calm her down. And yes, this will force the dark brotherhood questline on you. But how you resolve it will be up to you.

There was an interesting discussion for awhile on the morality of all this. Unfortunately, it reached 200 posts and got closed off before I even knew it existed, so I never got to put my two septims in.

You need to talk to the boy in windhelm to complete the Innocense Lost part. Otherwise Constance is in a fear state loop.

Speaking of which, I actually designed this model adoption system before Hearthfire was released. It's not exactly like the actual one, but it's within spitting distance.

No, actually I think it's better in some ways, since it doesn't force the player to do the DB questline, and if doesn't cause Constance to conveniently forget that you're a murderer. Ooooo, I just get a warm and fuzzy feeling when I realize that I did a better job than the staff at Bethesda.

GRELOD IS ALIVE
DRAGONBORN (to Grelod): "I'd like to adopt one of your children."
GRELOD: "Why in Oblivion would you want to adopt one of these useless little guttersnipes? I won't allow it."
DRAGONBORN:
[Persuade] "You obviously can't stand them. I'll take one of them off your hands for you."
[Bribe] "How about an 'adoption fee' of 100 septims?"
[If you are Thane] "I'm in tight with the jarl. Maybe I should talk to her about how you're treating these kids."
GRELOD: "Fine, take one of the brats. Take them all, for all I care. Talk to Constance about it."
(go to "ARRANGING THE ADOPTION")

GRELOD IS DEAD
DRAGONBORN: "I'd like to adopt one of your children."
CONSTANCE: "I understand... however, I haven't forgotten what you did to Grelod. Tell me why I should entrust one of my children to you after that."
[Persuade] "Grelod was a cruel, evil woman. I did what I did to protect these children."
[If you are Thane] "If you wish, the Jarl will vouch for me."

ARRANGING THE ADOPTION
CONSTANCE: "Very well, but I must ask you some questions. Are you married?"
DRAGONBORN: "Yes."
CONSTANCE: "Do you and your spouse have a home?"
DRAGONBORN: "Yes, we live in..."
[Breezehome, in Whiterun./Honeyside, here in Riften/etc.]
CONSTANCE: "Very well, then under Riften law, you are qualified. Which child would you like to adopt?"
DRAGONBORN: [says name of child]
CONSTANCE: "All right. Why don't you go to him/her and tell him/her the good news?"

Each child could have his/her own response to the news, of course. After speaking to the child, the Dragonborn and the adopted child are automatically transported to the house where they and their spouse dwell. And after that, it's simply a matter of adapting the child's dialogue: "Daddy! I'm so glad you're home.", that sort of thing.

Those kids at least have a house to live in. There are orphans in Whiterun, Dawnstar, Windhelm, and Solitude living on the streets that don't require murder.

You can adopt without the Bedroom wing, if that's what you mean. You just need the beds and dresser built in the upper level of the Main Hall.

QUOTE: Wow. i was really hoping that killing Grelod would make it be able to... adopt the kids

In the actual game, it IS required. That's why I think my system's better. :)

True. It would be nice if you could save the orphanage kids without killing Grelod. Best solution: persuade Maven to fire her. And once the Honorhall bunch have a good life with a loving headmistress, you can go adopt the street orphans.

Alas, you can't. You either leave the kids to suffer, or you put Grelod down. Justice, necessity, or murder... you have to decide that for yourself.

I definitely like your way better! Maybe one of these days I will do the TG and DB quest lines. Maybe. Not anytime soon. It's just not 'me'.

Well if Grelod did allow the children to be adopted, would that not sort of make killing her pointless? Killing her is part of the DB questline, so no, that should not be changed.

And you do not need to be married to adopt.

*sigh* I know that, Aussie. I designed that hypothetical adoption system before Hearthfire was announced. And I didn't get it perfect either, since I didn't think to add in the question that Constance asks ("What do you do for a living?") Bethesda got that part right.

And as for the DB quest, it is NOT rendered pointless. Indeed, it is not changed at all. Grelod is still at Honorhall, she's still making the kids' lives miserable, and Aventus is still willing to pay to have her dead. The only thing that my system would have changed is that the kids from Honorhall would have been adoptable whether the player chose to engage the DB questline or not.
