I hope Crytek know what they're doing...

Post » Sat May 01, 2010 6:08 pm

Hi :D I've probably posted this before and had the topic pushed to the abyss of nowhere so I'm posting it again. With all the optimization going around in Crysis 2, are we safe to assume that performance rates will increase? Cryengine 2 is little bit of a mess, it's probably THE worst optimized engine known to PC history. I usually get 30-50fps on Very High 1680x1050, No AA. Is there any hope of those numbers increasing in the sequel or are we going to end up with another PC destroyer?

Specs:

GTX 260 Overclocked to 655/1412/1098

Intel Core i5-661 Dual Core stocked @ 3.33ghz

4GB of DDR3 RAM

Windows 7 64-bit

P:S Just thought you should read what I'd enjoy NOT having posted on this thread:
Flamers (Not the user of course xD)
Trollers (Cause nobody likes those big ugly pricks :D)
AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, BRAGGING KIDDIES!

Thanks for reading this long post :D

I'd have you guys know, lots of people say that there's a possibilty of better frames because of less work heaps on the CPU. Aparrently, there's not as much to process in a city rather than a large open jungle. Once again, don't flame this :D

Think a 2.0 processor could do Crysis 2? All my other specs would no doubt do it.

Also, you should be getting alot better FPS with crysis. Try a tweak mod or something.

The CryEngine 3 will be much better optimized than CryEngine 2.

For example, the first CryEngine 3 demonstrations (siggraph 2009) showed global illumination scenes where the Nvidia GeForce 280 was getting 120fps. This is a major improvement compared to the 50fps I get currently with a Nvidia GeForce GTX285 on the CryEngine 2.

Just YouTube "CryEngine 3 Global Illumination" for the fps references and the scenes.

@Talon
I highly suggest you try the same scene on CE2. Hit me on Xfire and I'll send you that map they've used in the CE3 presentation.

its due to the fact that they changed how the lighting is done, its now done through deferred i think which saves a bucket on performance

and its not "poorly optimised" it just has far large view distances/complexity than anything else so you can't really compare...

Sorry for the yellow-looking ground, it's cause I didn't port Crysis' shader to warhead :p

@Flamer
Actually, they optimised the whole engine.

i know, but the lighting is the biggest single change (afaik) instead of having a 4 light light (realistically) you now have a limit in the 100's ;)
it also changes the way shadows are worked out which helps as well :)

So with all performance getting better, will my average of 30-50FPS on the CE2 go up alot or will it be a slight climb in FPS?

I would think that the fps will go up to about 90-100 for you. You might want to upgrade to a 285 or 460 though. :P

It might be less than those big sums, the tests are in small rooms with nothing much to process.
