I hope Skyrim doesn't turn into a 4 hour modding fest..

Post » Mon May 07, 2012 3:06 pm

if I want to reinstall oblivion or morrowind I have to spend 4 hours downloading and installing various things it's so obnoxious. I hope two years from now, if I get a new pc and I want to install Skyrim i dont have to go download and compile 10gb worth of mods.

Wishful thinking?

Haha, I see where you're coming from. Try to backup your old game folders though. Makes it a bit easier.

I'm fine with 10gb of mods... because that 10gb is a lot of added content. o.o

It's a personal preference I guess - I for one, like my game vanilla. I only install patches and fixes and such.

A total pipedream. Like many people, to me, the key point of PC TES games over most games is the amazing things people have cooked up and distributed as mods.

you could just back up the entire game directory every now and again, like i do. Plus I find siftin through all the mods actually pretty entertaining.

I get what he's saying. He's not against mods, he just wishes that Skyrim will be bearable in it's vanilla form a few years up the road, whereas Oblivion is just unplayable without mods.

Well, Oblivion needs certain mods to even make the game playable in my opinion. I certainly hope to be using a lot of mods in Skryim, but I hope it's because I want them to make a great game even better, not because I have to whip a clunker into something playable.

My heavily modded Oblivion was my favorite game ever, but it was a clunker out of the box. I still love it, though.

Generally, if I like a mod, I back up a copy of it on my external HD. That way if I do lose my install, at least the mods are safe >.>

Really the only mods I look for are weapons and armor mods. I like the occasional texture mod and house mod as well. I don't go for a lot of the big overhaul mods as they tend to add just a bit to much(see FWE or Fook for Fallout). But small things like a badass armor set hidden somewhere deep in a dark dangerous dungeon guarded by Satan's own brother makes me happy. I'm really interested to see how the vanilla game is this time around. OB was kinda bland for a TES game but I still loved it. It just needed that 10-30g of mods to make it better.

Yep and I always make backups of the original game files in case a mod screws something up, so I don't have to reinstall the whole game.

You must be new to modding, cause it's really not that complicated. You simply back up your main gamefolder and saves. Also keep your files organized.

Ah... I remember the days when my Oblivion folder occupied a grand total of 45gigs on my hard drive... never again. Now, I have OOO, Oblivion XP, Living Economy, Unique Landscapes, Lost Spires, and that's it.

For Skyrim, I will download only well done quest mods or mods which truly enhance my gameplay experience.

thats why i won't reinstall oblivion, way too much stuff i have to go searching for to make the game to my liking.

open borders mod
open cities mod
hd texture packs various ones
midas magic
one of the overhauls but a lighter version that just got rid of same lvled creatures
merchant traveler mod similar to what was in fallout
better hotkeys mod
better inventorys mod

and thats not the fun stuff, i added so many i remember i had this one where i had to find books, read them and go by the instructions of the book to find weapons and/or armor they put in the game, they weren't like super op weapons either but it was fun hunting for them.

CivV has integrated mod downloading, installing and managing right into the game, wich is nice! It would have been great having this with Skyrim... but... no. :(

I've got all my mods for Bethesda's games nicely organised and stored away with notes on load order and various other quirks, Fallout 3 and Oblivion are well and truly finished for me though, I may end up deleting everything and starting fresh in the long, long distant future.

Oh man I can't imagine Skyrim with mods...I tried Fallout 3 and Oblivion and they really did improve the game, but I mostly wanted things like dynamic weather, sunlight, snow, rainbows(eh why not >.>) being able to see things through windows, better lighting, higher res textures, better faces bodies, higher difficulty, better combat, I can go on and on...

but since Skyrim fixes most of these, I arn't no wud ellse 2 phix o_O

I don't mind downloading huge amounts of mods, but they're sure a pain to reinstall.

I also don't mind start using some mods right away. Some of the first mods made for Oblivion were a fix for the creepy horse eyes and saddlebags! Who wouldn't want those? I don't mind little things that have nothing to do with the actual story content and won't interfere with the first play-through.

There's this nifty little utility out there called "backup". Saves all kinds of time and heartburn with having to redownload stuff. A word to the wise, though, if you're running Vista or Win7, don't rely on the native utility. Go find one that will do the job for real rather than the pretend job that Microsoft tries to foist off on you.

I'm a modding maniac. Of course I'll be modding Skyrim and making a few of my own, too. But Skyrim will remain a vanilla game on the first run to get the feel of it, at least until about halfway, then I'll add my mods and start over.

Morrowind and Oblivion got that treatment. Oddly, I didn't mod the Fallouts at all.
