Horrible framerate

Post » Sat Dec 18, 2010 11:54 am

Hello everyone!

As the topic title mentions I'm experiencing a horrible framerate in-game which almost makes the game unplayable, not only is the FPS subpar compared to other modern games but it's also very laggy, basically it's almost impossible to aim at anything outside V.A.T.S.

Now this problem is a constant one, not just around a lot of NPCs, I can run around in the wastelands without a living (or non-living for that matter) being in sight and I still stutter forward like I'm detoxing from a heroin binge, basically it's all bad all the time and I'm running out of options to test, and thus I'm creating this topic.

What I've tried so far:
  • Turn off V-sync. (Really turning it off through the .ini file
  • Several versions of the d3d9.dll-file.
  • Lowering every setting to the point that it looks like the original Quake running on a 486.
  • Updating the game, all my drivers and trying to downgrade my GFX drivers just out of pure desperation.
  • In-depth benchmarking all my hardware including long-running stresstests.

Any ideas? And I do mean any idea, I'm getting real desperate over here.

Any ideas? And I do mean any idea, I'm getting real desperate over here.

i tried all of those with no luck.
what worked for me was the above PLUS the fix suggestion of disabling all non-microsoft codecs.
i went from slideshow on low w/ all settings turned off to high with everything turned on, and running smoothly.

There's a few things you can try that i've noticed helped other people:

1. Try disabling the Steam In-Game overlay. Go into the properties for the game in Steam and turn off "Enable Steam Community In-Game"
2. Try the "Disable Desktop Composition" option in properties of FalloutNV.exe in "/Steam/steamapps/common/fallout new vegas" It's in the Compatibility tab.
3. Check for any OSD software installed on your computer, try disabling or uninstalling it.
4. Third party multimedia codecs can cause major issues as well, you may want to uninstall any you have.

Try temporarily disabling your audio card from Windows 7 device manager and then run Fallout to see how it performs with no audio processing going on.

I can't quite figure what audio card you are running from looking at your dxdiag report.

It's worth a try and you can simply enable your card again if this does not reveal any improvement.

Disabling all non-microsoft codecs? Is there a safe way this can be achieved?

I read those suggestions while I was googling (perhaps from this very board!) and did try everything but the OSD, but I don't have anything in that department to disable! (Sorry, should've listed these in the original post).

I tried disabling it, no dice, and shouldn't it have affected other games aswell? And yeah, I'm not a big fan of onboard audio devices either but a general goes to war with the army he has. ;)

Thanks for the suggestions people! I really do appreciate them. I'll actually re-try a couple of them to make sure I did them right the first time.

Sorry for hijacking your thread but i seem to have the same problem as you, i figured i might aswell post here instead of starting i new thread. When setting the graphics to default it the game says i should run ultra quality. But when i play its really laggy sometimes. Ive tried tweaking the ingame object viewdistance and it makes almost no difference. Really strange.

Newer the graphic card, worse the situation I guess. Cuz the dam engine is too damn old. New graphic card + win7 = wait for the patch.

There's a fix for this that works for most people.

You'll find it on the Fallout New Vegas Nexus http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34778

Things i did to get my game performing better.
Try some of them if you want but use at your own risk. Some of these tweaks can damage or cause more problems.

. Lowered graphics
This didnt help much at all. Stuttering and lag still remain. So i put them back up. Got the same exact performance.

.Disabled steam ingame overlay
Did nothing for me

.Tried setting game/process affinity to only use 2 cores instead of 4.
No change

.Tried every process priority setting
No improvement

. Applied Ati dll fix (Cause im using an ati card)
Fixed the lag when npc's are around, but still micro-sttuttering and stuttering remain.

. Closed Background Tasks and services ( I did this manualy but you can do it safer via program called "GameBooster")
With almost nothing left running in the background (Only system process. And my os was only using 600+Mb ram with no cpu activity at all) the micro-sttutering / stuttering remains.

. Defraged Harddrive (Didnt use windows defragger, instead i used a program called "Defraggler". Much faster and works better)
Problem still there.

. Did virus/spyware/adware/malware Scan
Nothing came up

. Defragged gamefiles using steam
There wer no fragmented files

. Disabled Virtual Memory/Pagefile ( Having this on with more than 4gigs of ram installed is pointless. It just gives stress to your harddisk converting space into virtual ram, causing stuttering)
Some improvement noticeable. Micro-stuttering still there.

. Disabled indexing in the partition the games installed in ( Indexing causes your HDD To work fulltime everytime, again causing stutters in games)
More improvement. Micro-stuttering still there

. Enabled Write-Caching on Harddisk ( Even tho dangerous i went on ahead and turnd this option on. It makes the harddisk work faster basicaly but if ever a power shortage occurs, there is a chance that you will loose data)
No realy improvement noticeable.

. Installed more Ram. Because im using a 32 bit OS my pc coudnt rcognize more than 3.25GB Ram, I fixed this by downloading a kernel hack which enabled the use of 128GB ram in a 32bit system
Faster loading time. No real improvement in game performance.

. Allowed 3GB ram to be used by applications ( Did this via command prompt command. BCDEDIT /set increaseuserva 3072)
Performance boost noticeable, improved loading times. Mirco-stutter still there.

Disabled All Windows 7 Aero effects , set everything to basic windows style ( Disabled desktop composition )
No improvement

.Downloaded codecsniper to locate unwanted/unnecessary codecs such as ffdshow and deleted/uninstalled them.
No noticeable improvement. But i dont see ffdshow converting audio files in the background while playing the game, so thats good

. Downloaded and installed CCC 10.10c Hotfix driver.
Didnt really make a difference. The hotfix is for crossfired video cards which i dont have, so it didnt improve my performance.

.Disabled my useless realtek onboard soundcard ( Should have done this a long time ago cause i dont even use it)
It wasnt being used so there was no effect

.Lowered my mouse Hz to 500. Having it at 1000 caused me to stutter everything i actualy used the mouse ingame. Im guessing this is because 1000 uses cpu power.
Lowered stuttering abit when turning

. Applied all INI tweaks for fallout3 listed in tweakguides (http://www.tweakguides.com/Fallout3_1.html )
No improvement . It seemd to have made my performance worst so i revert the files back to default.
Two ini tweaks lessend stuttering tho.

fGrassWindMagnitudeMax=0
fGrassWindMagnitudeMin=0

setting these to 0 will remove movement with ingame bushes, "swaying" with the wind. Lessens realism but also improved my performance a bit.

.Disabled Vsync via ini setting.
iPresetInterval= 0
No more vsync to cap my fps.

. Applied 4GB enabler + Stutter fix ( Which you can both find in falloutNV nexus. Doesnt work without a hacked executable tho)
Game seemd smoother yes but still micro-stuttering remains

. Began to suspect it must be my crappy Lcd monitor so i switched to my Crt monitor which i use for harddcore gaming. Lowered my resolution to 1280xXXX and set to 100 hz
Idk why this worked for me, micro-stutter vanished.

. Forced AA and AF in CCC instead of enabling it in launcher.
Gave me a very high performance boost but the AA isnt as good . Box AA seems to have no effect to the game but Edge-detect does. Kinda annoyed that only edge-detect works because it makes everything blurry but its the only AA i can use atm. Launcher AA and AF kills my performance even tho i should be able to handle it just fine with my current resolution.

. Was gonna result to overclocking but not anymore since everythings fine.
. Also was gonna upgrade to an SSD harddrive to get rid of any type of stuttering.

With the stuttering/micro-stuttering gone i set my graphics back up and get nice performance. Lucky enough ive only crashed once in game after days of playing.
I do not recommend anyone doing some the things i did. Some of them are risky and can cause damage or more problems.

For people with more than 10 Gigs of ram. You should try out a program called "RamDisk". This program basicaly enables you to installe a program/game directly into RAM, in result you get instant loading times because everything is already loaded up, nothing to search/take from HDD, everything is in RAM. Better performance overall, might get rid of any kind of stuttering aswell who knows.

But again just documenting the things i had to do to get this d@mn game working properly. Sorry for my bad english grammar/spelling.

You can find 4gb enabler , Stutter remover, Dll fix in the nexus site.
http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/categories.php
Their probably in the utilities section im not sure.

Goodluck.

This game is really really in need of being patched. It preforms very very poorly on my system which should rip through it like its nothing. I've got the fixed .dll and it still has a lot of stutters and frame rate drops. Just sad that such crap is pushed out to make a deadline no matter if its done or not. Its like buying a beta and hoping they finish it. I'll avoid titles from these guys until I read through reviews in the future. My mistake.

You're right - sorry, I just skimmed your original post, as there are tons of stutter-related posts, and I was on a d3d9.dll roll at the time.

I know you said you tried reducing everything, but mebbe not everything... I found that the sort of non-npc-related stutter you describe vanished for me when I reduced Water Multisampling to Low in the advanced setting. With that reduced, I can run everything else ultra-high, no stutter. With water multisampling high, I get horrible stutter in the wasteland just running around. Worth a shot...

I tried lowering it and still had the same horrible framerate, but now I managed to solve my problem; I reset my directshow filter.
I used the tool found http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35868 which is probably posted on this forum aswell, and the download has a lengthy and well-written explanation as to why this causes stuttering and horrible framerates.

So now I'm running everything on ultra (including water multisampling) with a constant high FPS, it is truly a relief!

I'd like to thank everyone in this thread who helped my to try and find a solution, I'm truly humbled.

Over and out.

If you have not already tried it....

d3d9.dll fix

There is a Nvidia and ATI version.

Fallout New Vegas Nexus has the download.

Comment of the day:

If I had a cap for every bug I've encountered in FO:NV I would be a rich man.

Try the first one first then the other if it doesn't work.

I had the same problem as you, I tried everything to fix it but in the end I have installed Windows XP 32bit on a second hard drive and I am playing Fallout NV on there.
Windows 7 64bit - 7-28 fps on medium settings
Windows XP 32bit - 55-85fps on ultra

I'm not sure if the delay or stuttering that is being discussed is what I witnessed today or not but I've been playing FNV on my PC without having any real problems with game delays beyond a number of two tenths of a second pause. These happen quite frequently.

Anyway, I've been playing with Steams access to the net turned off.
Today, for the first time since I started playing I figured "why not?" so I gave Steam access to the web and started playing the game.

Suddenly, there were horrible pauses with nothing responding. It was like the game froze up for anywhere from 1 to 15 seconds. Then I could take anywhere from 5 to 40 steps and ZAP, it would freeze up.

Figuring the problem might be with Steam trying to contact its website I shut the game down, turned off Steams access to the web and restarted the game. Problem solved. No real hesitation beyond the tenth of a second things that have been present ever since I started playing.

If your Steam is online I suggest opening up Steam and selecting the "Store" screen, going to the upper left hand corner and clicking on Steam. Then select go offline and ok it's restarting.

Hope this helps someone. :)

So a game LABELED and PACKAGED as a game for Windows doesn't work on Windows unless you use the 32bit? Great.
