Horrible random low-res textures all of a sudden

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 8:22 am

So I've put a good 15 hours or so into Skyrim without having any issues. Latest patch did something to screw up random textures/shading on my desktop. I run everything on ULTRAHIGH (except shadows are just on high) and this is what most of my game now looks like http://minus.com/mYHlk9yIs#1o

Slide to the right for a comparison with my laptop with everything on high (so LOWER settings than my desktop) with the same game save, and it looks much better. It's how the game used to look on my desktop. I've completely uninstalled and removed Skyrim from my PC then reinstalled it through Steam, I have no mods running, I have the latest video drivers installed... I don't know what gives. Bethesda support has been unresponsive. Healp :(

Changed your drivers recently? Check you aren't forcing low quality textures in your CCC/Nvidia control panel.

Looks like maybe it reset your resolution...make sure your resolution setting in the launcher is at your monitor's 'native' setting.

In case that isn't it, what gpu and gpu driver version? In your nvidia or CCC, your texture filtering setting may have dropped if you updated those drivers also. Also, in moving from a 4gb launcher (previous skyrim patch) back to the normal steam launcher, your CCC/nvidia may not be recognizing your new launcher situation, and applying lower res "global" setting. (ninja'd!)

I have 2x AMD 6950's in crossfire, using drivers from December. I'll check when I get home. I hadn't checked the driver settings though, so I'll give that a shot when I get home. Screen resolution itself is fine, still running at 1920x1200, but it could be something else. Thanks!

Make sure you look in the advanced options and everything is on ultra or maxed out. Probably level shadows on high.

Looks normal to me.
Also looks like the whole streaming texture issues on the 360 isn't just isolated to the 360.

3thereal, I'm running two 6950's in Crossfire as well, and December drivers 11.12 as well as 12.1 preview drivers are giving me problems in Skyrim which might be similar to yours. I had to revert to 11.11c performance drivers to get rid of the bugs, I even sent a support request to AMD and received an answer saying they were submitting the problem to the driver team to see if it was replicable. You might want to try uninstalling 11.12's and install 11.11c's, I have a feeling it might solve your issue.

This happens to me randomly as well. I don't have screenshots as evidence, but the two area's that this was most notable to me were: I think the first time I saw it was in Blackreach? The area where you have to gather the red nirn roots. That is one beautiful area. I was running around in there for about an hour and all of a sudden, the whole cavern lit up. I could see all the ay across it. All the particles that were floating around in there just disappeared, shadows went away, and everything except the NPC's and myself just stopped moving. The water suddenly turned really ugly too. At first I thought it was supposed to happen, story related or something, so I ignored it. When nothing else happened, I tried saving and reloading a couple of times with no effect. Then I exited out to Skyrim and came back in and BAM, all the beautiful extras were back. The atmosphere was full of floaty pretty things, the water was beautiful again, and the cavern was much darker as it should be. Don't know what the cause might have been, memory leak maybe. The other place I noted something of the sort was while doing the mage quests. Dont' remember the name of the place, but there is a dwemer machine that has a ray of light coming in through the ceiling. My first time in I couldn't figure out what to do because I wasn't seeing any ray of light, even in the daytime when I was supposed to be seeing it. The wall, floor, and surface textures just looked like they were borrowed from Morrowind as well. Using the same tactic as before, exiting and entering a couple of times, I saw the same effect. The light was there, the floaty particles were back, and the ray of light was there like it was supposed to be. Just happens randomly. It's rare though, so I'm not really complaining,.........much.

Like I said, everything is maxed out (except shadows are only on high)

Nope, no modifications whatsoever to my game. I thought it must have been my save game, since I wiped out everything and reinstalled, but I loaded that same save on my laptop to take that second screenshot for comparison.

I tried downgrading back to 11.11, no change.

Also, the problem isn't exactly randomly happening, it just happens to a bunch of different random textures, but it's always the same ones. A rock here, a building there, but always the same damn rock and building. And it's on a LOT of textures. Some textures are loading at the resolution they should be (TEXTURE resolution, I'm not talking about my screen resolution here)

I've sent 2 support requests to Bethesda and they've been sitting there for over a week now without a response. What the heck mang? Is there any other way that anyone knows of where I can get assistance on this issue? I've never had an issue like this that couldn't be solved without a bit of research. Other games run fine, Battlefield 3 still looks amazing. Thanks for everyone's attempts so far though.

Here, I think this might clear up a LOT of speculation as to what my problem is. Here is a screenshot of a loading screen, this perfectly shows off the issue. http://min.us/mEuLk1HiR#1o

And this loading screen shows up the same way every time.

I guess I'm more picky than you haha. I wouldn't mind so much if I could find some official confirmation that there was a way or will be a way to fix it in the near future. When you spend so much cash on new video cards in preparation for 2 games, and one of them looks like poop, it gets on your nerves :)

As I've hinted earlier.. it's pretty much normal for this game.
I've been seeing it on and off since release, but I find playing in shorter intervals help clear it up so the game runs properly.

My best guess is the 360 texture bug is in the pc version too.
I believe they experienced the same issues if the game was 'installed' to the HDD.
Guess what? A 360 is not all that different than your PC, and your only option to play is to install it to the HDD....

Bump. Bethesda still ignoring support requests. Still can't find anything online about this issue. Does anyone know how to roll back to a previous version? It's the only thing I can think of at this moment.

Either that or I'm just going to break down and try some mods to see if their textures work. Sad that I have to even do that though :(
