horse and cart: A missed opportunity

Post » Fri Dec 28, 2012 6:12 pm

I was just a little bit dissapointed in the horse and cart of Skyrim. I didn't like that it was just a paid fast-travel service. IMO it could have been a lot more...

1. No fast travel: You sit on the cart as it travels to your preferred destination (Obviously it would be quicker then walking, about as fast as a normal horse journey)

2. Random encounters: If you're sat in the cart as it's travelling along Skyrim, it would be so fun to have some bandits or beasts come along and try and raid the cart! It would make it far more exciting.

Just a tiny idea of mine...

There is a mod on the Nexus (I think) that has these features! You should search around and see if you can find it. If I were less lazy I'd find it for you.

There used to be a mod like this that was created by one of Skyrim's developers, but it's not on the Nexus anymore, for whatever reason. But there is another version that is still available (I'm pretty sure).

Real-time carriage travel was cut before release. This system was released as a mod by one of the developers several months ago. It does not work very well, in my opinion. It's always possible they may revisit this idea and release it as a content patch in the future, if they can ever get it to work properly (though I wouldn't bet on it). In the meantime, modders are working on this, if you are on PC.

While I agree, it just wasn't possible. As Pseron mentioned, the developers had trouble with it, and decided the time was better spent elsewhere in the game.

Doubt it will be in this game... if anything, expect it to be done properly in ESVI at this point.

At best, we might hope that it's a simple feature that's a tiny part of a $5 expansion... doubt they would put that much work in for even a patch like Mounted Combat was.

To that end, I actually find myself using the cart a lot now - since I stopped fast-traveling and just trekked across the land to various cities. I find it an "acceptable" way to fast-travel to drop stuff off if I'm overloaded. ^_^

I do too. It brings back fond memories of Morrowind for me. I also use a mod that makes carriage travel much more expensive (500 gold per ride) so carraige travel is a luxury in my games - as it should be, in my opinion.

I would love to have a horse-and-cart that you own, while your housecarl/follower drives it for you. When you go adventuring, they can stay with the cart while you go in the dungeon and clean out all the loot. Then you could load it up on the wagon and carry 4 times as much stuff! Your housecarl could guard the cart for you while you're away, and random bandit attacks could add some adventure to travelling the roads. Once the cart is full, you could send your housecarl home or to town to sell everything, and then they would meet up with you in a specified location later.
