Horseback riding

Post » Thu May 10, 2012 4:11 am

So what do you guys think about the Horseback riding in Skyrim?

To me the horse riding is a lot better than horse riding in Oblivion but just as annoying as Oblivion. I hated riding horses in Oblivion the controls were so wonky and it was annoying, so I always ran around. In Skyrim the controls are a lot better the horse is easier to maneuver, but I still find horse riding in this game annoying. Again I would much rather run around on foot, even though it takes way longer to travel from point A to point B.

Still feels like driving a tank, poor animations, no mounted combat, horrendous horse AI.

I won't be using a horse. Terrible.

I am not a fan of horseback riding. I didn't ride a Horse in third person in Oblivion. I would have much prefered some first person horse riding action.

Well, it's nice to just stroll around taking in the landscape and music, sound, etc. But, the running is just so clunky and slow that there's almost no point in getting on them at all. I guess it's more of a horseback rider's escape than an actual benefit to a combat or maneuverability aspect of the game.

Still a bit clunky, but miles ahead of Oblivion's horse riding.

Meh...it's ok on flat ground.... :/ weird animations going up hill and a 5ft fall that wont even hurt my character destroys the horse :/

Look good as well but they just have really weird proportions now that everyone else is trim and sixy looking and now the horses are insanely obese/muscular. :/

i think its fun to ride though. while you speak the truth, i find that riding a horse is just a good way to take in the scenery. today i rode from riften to solitude (making them the only two major towns i've been to so far other than windhelm) and i firstly realized how mindbogglingly huge the world actually is (way bigger than i thought it was gonna be) and secondly i found that creatures don't spawn nearly as much when you're on horseback.

i'm probably going to be using the horse a lot since i'm not fast traveling.

Hate how you cant look behind you.
I also hate how the camera acts

ocarina of time on the n64 had better horses. :/

Does everyone know that horses run slower off road, they only trot. You can only gallop/go full speed on a road. It seems horses are still pretty much only useful for fast-travel, normal travel and exploration is best done on foot. Especially since you don't need to dismount whenever you come across an enemy.

I forgot to mention that hoses can swim now, which is also a huge improvement on Oblivion horses.

It works for me, just wish the horse would ride a bit faster. Not sure if there are different speed types though. I hope there are. Also able to zoom in more would've been nice.

It's not perfect, but it's a huge improvement. And although you can't fight while on horseback, once you get off the horse in order to face your attacker, your horse will attempt to help you by ramming it's head against your enemy. Also, as someone stated above, horses can swim now.

This is the year 2011.

I'd think by this time the horse animation thing would be well understood BY PRIOR ART.

I saw better animations in Dark Ages of Camelot from the year 2000, for horses.
Age of Conan is a much more recent example of how it is done right.
Red Dead Redemption, anyone? That was magical.

So, my idea of what Skryim horses are good for, given the AI problems and the gross art and poor animation?

HORSE MEAT burgers are damn good.

I suppose in time this can be fixed by a skilled modder that cares enough for the game to see it done right.

Until then, I'll enjoy horse barbecues.

I don't like how it turns instantly to where you're aiming with WASD. It should be more like Mount & Blade or Resident Evil, where A/D just rotates it slowly on a circle.

Just add it to the simple crap that Bethesda don't have the skill to get right.

to be fair, ocarina of time had the best horseriding combat in any game ever made. comparing it to that is unfair.,

considering how theres no mounted combat and theres a chance to run into an enemy at any time, i simply dont see a reason to travel by horse.

riding a tank through the woods and through mountains is not fun...

correction, Shadow of the Colossus has THE BEST horse riding in a game.
You steer left and right with the reigns, and you press a button to 'kick' the horse making it move to the next speed 'level' ( walk, trot, canter and gallop)
Also, the horse acts like a horse, as in sometimes it will pull at the reigns, and it can navigate through narrow areas without you needing to steer it.
It makes it feel like you are actualy riding an animal, rather than 'driving' one.

Still awkwardly clunky. Also, no mounted combat. I wonder what Skyrim's budget was compared to the Mount and Blade series? Yet Mount and Blade, while not having the best horse controls in the world, has the best, most intuitive mounted combat I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing.

Better than Oblivion, but I swear riding a horse in Skyrim is almost slower than running on foot. And a horse at full gallop is slower than a character sprinting. You also have to dismount to fight. And heaven help you, you WILL accidentally hit the horse as it tries to fight the enemy too and gets in-between you and your target. So then you have to kill your horse as it attacks you too.

Sell me a horse? Gah. Yeah, right. Those stable owners couldn't pay me enough to make stealing a horse worth it.

Heh I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates horses. It's just feels so unnatural, compared to walking/running. I honestly just take them when I go to a new place cause it's slightly faster.

The horses are depressing, worse than in Oblivion. I hope they was not made this bad on purpose to get people to not use them so they can be cut from the next game. I never went anywhere in oblivion without my horse. I had commands that mad it follow me. In Skyrim I rolled back to a save after trying the horse out for 5 minutes. I just can't use them the turn rate is ridiculous.

Better than Obllivion, Though I was still able to go up a vertical mountain...it was straight up and down...o_O

Still, the Trot/ Gallop buttons/funtion is annoying as well

I think they did a pretty good job, waaaaaaay better than Oblivion. Red Dead Redemption still has the best horse animations to date.
