Horses! Horses! Horses!

Post » Fri May 11, 2012 9:48 pm

Hello, I'm just looking for a little help in getting a horse. I have just heard that all horses are the same in terms of running speed and stamina, is this true? Also, how many different colors of horses are there and where can I buy each specific color? And last but not least, how much gold does each color horse cost? Do they all cost the same amount? Thanks in advance!

Sorry, I don't know anything about horses in this game. I haven't even seen one yet.
Well, except for that glitch.

I've only experimented with horses a few times, but I believe they all go the same speed and the color differences are purely aesthetic. I don't have sufficient evidence on this, so I would do some more research on that if I were you. However, I will say that I couldn't find much use in owning a horse for the following reasons:

1. You can't interact with anything while on a horse, and in order to get off, you have to fully stop, and take a second or two to dismount.
2. Things attack your horse, and because you have to dismount when mounted, the enemies generally start hitting your horse before you can start hitting them. (unless you dismount a ways off)
3. The horse attacks your enemies, which may sometimes be a good thing, but sometimes it runs off to fight enemies that you can't see because they're behind rocks or trees or a tower, and ends up dying.
4. The horse will outrun your companions, if you have them, and they will not get on the horse with you, so you either have to ditch the horse or wait for your companion to catch up.

Since you can fast travel, I found that I was only using my horse to get to new places which I didn't think was worth the trouble. However, at least one good thing is that horses will fast travel with you, so if you leave your horse somewhere, move away from it, and fast travel somewhere else, you will still have your horse with you.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention, the horses I bought were 1000g.

Thanks, this is a big help. But I need some more help, my main question is this: Will I be able to buy a white horse? If so, where can I buy one?

Horse are worthless, nothing more than breathing paperweights taking up space. They're not even worthy of being called a novelty.

That being said, I believe I saw some white ones in whatever town it is that all the citizens are having nightmares.

Oh please i have had my horse take out a bandit camp, your horse will fight for you, which also mean it might run away for you if you dismount in the wild, and you aggroed a wolf some time ago.

There aren't any white horses in the game. There are five different colors. Black (Whiterun), Grey (Riften), Palomino (Solitude), Black & White Pinto (Markarth), and Bay (Windhelm). The palominos or the greys are probably about the closest to white you're gonna get. Oh, and I do believe that all colors cost $1000.

It would be nice if we can buy saddle bags for our horses that can carry extra items. It's like an extra backpack.

You can get a free horse named "Frost" (I think) from a quest in Riften, they're poorly programmed to be honest, attacking anything in sight. Mine got [censored] by a Blood Dragon and fell off a cliff into a river, never to be seen again.

All im gonna say is horses svck and you seem to be more prone to glitches on horses and if you glitch its hard to control the horse and then its hard to dismount and it takes forever when u do dismount

I bought one horse, and it died. it was dumb.

I do have one badass horse you get later though. It feels faster, and doesn't die. I cant find the spoiler thing, so i won't ruin it, but All the other horses die far too fast to be used. Dragons eat them.

Getting off and on the horse is too frustrating for me to use them as many enemies you won't see until they are charging at you already. They do tend to help out in a fight but also go running off attacking enemies forcing you to chase after the horse.

One positive thing I can say is that they do negate the over-encumbered issue so you can ride to a dungeon, load up on stuff past the limit that prohibits running or fast travel, then get on your horse and get back to the nearest town fairly quick. Otherwise you'd walk at a crawls pace or forego all the loot.

I don't bother with horses myself. I tried them a few times, but overall I prefer walking because I pick up ingredients along the road.

Oh really? I heard about this prior, but didn't know if it was true or not. Thanks, this is what I needed to know. No warrior of mine is complete without a white stalion (or pack mule in this case lol).

I had gotten a horse when I started, it was kinda nice to get around on. However it got killed at the ice runner. now I have a horse that follows me everywhere I fast travel, it's not actually my horse I borrowed it from the storm cloaks [not stole]. half the time it stays put and half time it just wanders off. Still I think it's nice to have one around, especially a free one.

That's pretty cool that there is a unique white horse in the game. I never knew that. Sounds perfect for you. :)

They REALLY screwed up horses in this game.

I wanted one as well, until I found out they were utterly useless.

The speed is horrible, and every horse seems to be out of shape.

You'll be making frequent pit stops to fight bandits/wolves/etc etc.

And your horse can't carry [censored].
