[REQ] 24 Hours Format

Post » Tue Jan 01, 2013 5:56 am

Would it be possible to change the AM/PM format to a 24 hours format? I know of a mod which changes weekdays names to regular one and I was wondering if that would be possible for the time format as well. I inquired in the SkyUI thread but I am not sure it is its area so maybe a separate mod would eventually do, problem is I have no idea what gameplay setting to change, any idea?

As my mother would say:
After midnight, pefore midnight.

My mum is an idiot.

I grew up on AM/PM and was taught it as After Midnight/Pre Midnight. just started getting a hang of 24hr scale a few years ago.

Actually I believe AM stands for "Ante Meridiem" (latin for before midday) and PM stands for "Post Meridiem" (after midday), I can decipher what time it is all right, but I definitely find more suitable the 24 hours format which is used in my country (and by the military all over the world I believe) :)

You're right. But we teach kids differently. I always chose to interpret it as "after midnight, past midday". Mostly because my mums idea was stupid. :lol:

I didn't mean to sound as a know-it-all, sorry :) Your way of teaching kid is easier to understand (for them) though so in the end more feasible.

Yeah, I also never get it.
* Ante/After Midday/Midnight
* Pre/Post Midday/Midnight
Could be anything *shrugs*

So if there is a 24-hour mod, I'd like that :)

No, I didn't take it that way. You'd be surprised how many people don't know that. My sister didn't find that out until she was like 19. And to be honest, I didn't even realise some places used 12-hour time. So that's my interesting fact of the day. :)

Not to start a timeformat-war (does it exist I wonder? haha) but the 24 hours system sounds more practical, with 4 numbers you can convey the precise time of the day as opposed to four numbers plus the addition of AM/PM, not to mention that in the 24 hours system I can tell you "see you at 9" and I wouldn't leave you wonder if I meant 9AM or 9PM. Anyways, I guess we are stuck with what our culture gave us for the time being.

This made me curious; Apparantly we use a 12 hours clock, and one exists, because the Sumerians had a base 12 number system, meaning using two 12 hour periods instead of one 24 hour period worked better for them.

Americans still use this system simply because we are resistant to change. The same reason we use our incredibly insane system of inches, feet, and yards...

>_> my ipod uses the 24 hour format since the CAO system at work uses it as well. Makes it easier to tell when an order is gonna open or close.

The Sumerians had a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/sixagesimal.
That's why we have 60 minutes in an hour, 360 degrees in a circle, etc.

But 12 is nonetheless important, indeed, the 12 hours, the 12 months, but also 12 inches in a foot*, 12 ounces in a pound**, 12 pence in a shilling, etc.

* I never knew that, I never knew there was logic in the imperial system!
I've always learned: roughly 4 inches in a decimeter, roughly 3 foot in a meter. I never knew there was there was a ratio between them.
** And ounces, pounds and stone, as 30 grams, half a kilogram and six kilogram.
Edit: And thus I noticed: 12 pounds is a stone! Is that correct?

Wouldn't you need to modify all the quest text too? Don't some of them say 'come by wherever after 8pm' etc.?

Nah, that wouldn't matter. I can understand AM/PM, it just bothers me in the Time Window of resting.

The same reason we use our incredibly insane system of inches, feet, and yards...
Don't even get me started with the imperial system; in the metric system I am 1.94m tall and 95kg in the imperial system I am around 6'6" which sounds much less impressive and around 200 lbs which makes me sound fat lol.

That's just because you're used to metrics. 6'6" is super tall and impressive sounding to me. You're taller than like 99% of people I know. (Including myself) And 200lbs doesn't make you sound fat, you're just not super skinny, which isn't even remotely a bad thing.

It's all about perspective. :D

Maybe you are right, still to my hears 200 sounds harsher than 95 :)

haha, okay maybe you are right, I wonder why the imperial system breaks at 6 though? After 6'6" there's 7'(0") right?

Rest, wait, map. Also just by hitting tab and having the 4 option comma rose come up.

6'6" is 6 feet, 6 inches; Since there are 12 inches in a foot. so 7'0" is 7 feet, zero inches. (Or just 7 feet)

EDIT: Wow double post. I'm cool. B)
