I'd say it's worth it. It's a very nice little house once you have all the furnishings and whatnot.

You could always join the Companions Guild or the Winterhold College for a free room.

I have a house and I like it. I mean, it helps to have a place to store things when on the go (those dragon bones and scales weigh a lot) along with everything else! So I say yes. Plus you can upgrade it to have all of the "tables" for crafting in one easy location! Worth the 5k (in Whiterun anywho).

I use the thieves guild. It has alchemy table. and nearby is smithy.
