I saw a few locations while wandering the world and though "I'd love to be able to build a house here." Really wish we had the opportunity to amass some resources, buy house plans and build our own house.

I wish I could put the Riften house in Whiterun (including the lake).I love the town but the house is so small and no enchanting.I love the house in Riften but the town is so-so and there is no smelter. To be able to pick a spot and build your own house would be awesome!

houses by default should have a few chests side by side for efficient and easy item storage.

Two great house mods for Solitude and Whiterun.

The Whiterun one puts an enchanting table and an enchanter's satchel in the same room with the alchemy table (replaces that side table).

The Dragonborn mod for Solitude puts in a smithy and extra containers in the basemant in the room next to the alchemy/enchanting station. Very very close and handy; especially with a "spouse" stationed there to sell too.

I like the fact that the house in Markath has 4 bookshelves close to each other. For a book worm, that's a blessing!

Your wrong about Riften storage actualy, it has 12 storage items. I think most people miss the 3 barrels above the steps.

1 dinning room, 5 in bedrrom, 3 barrels above steps, 3 in House Carl's room.

It is also near the main gate, and is nice and cozy.

I would like an alchemy satchel on the alchemy station, and a chest by the enchanting station though.

agree the housing is on the poor side. i know beth looks at mods, do they not see what kind of house mods are the most popular, thus, what players want in a house? every housing mod i see has tons of storage...for fallout 3, oblivion, and FNV. no containers by work stations simply doesn't make sense; in real life or a game. i would more or less be ok with the houses as is, if container storage made sense. i don't know why they removed fallout style container sorting.

markarth is probably the best, though i won't live there again (the people of markarth are a horrible lot). whiterun is very solid, practical with adequate storage (no enchant table is a big negative though). riften is my favorite aesthetically, but it's too small and with the housecarl and a wife, i'm constantly pushing them out of my way and listening to a non-stop barrage of 'my thane this' 'my love that'. please stop talking already.

also, there's really no excuse for the houses to have as many bugs as they do. i find it impossible to believe these bugs were not found during testing.

Totally agree and with the OP. Lack of storage near workstaions kill every house but Markarth...but them the town of Markarth kills the house in Markarth. If you want to enchant or make potions then go sell, the merchant selection is aweful. Or, if you are on your way back to your house after an adventure, and want to sell some of your plunder, again, markarth merchants are aweful. Best house is in the worst town!!

What puzzle me is this.

Bethesda can build great house.

Right now I got Riften:Honeyside, Markath:Vyndrell Hall, Solitude:Proudspire, and I had Whiterun:Breezehome with another character

What struck me is this, ***NPCs**** have AMAZING HOUSES

I was checking out my neighbors in solitude. We get 10 containers, they get in the 25-30 range !!!
Just Evette San, the bankrupt spice wine merchant, her house is tiny compared to mine
but on the first floor she got those racks of cupbords and piles of sacks
(that would be nice in my alchemy lab)

Erikur got that hugue stack of over a dozen barrels in his basemant

the emperor cousin (girl next door) got amazing storage as well

my housecarll usually greet me with *are you lost* *I hope you are not planning some trouble*

another thing that I noticed is the non existence of mobile lights
Candles were especially popular in morrowind !!! especially colored ones.
You could create subtle ambience

With the physics, decoration is a pain
But I did figure out in markath how to place books (piles of 2, no higher)
and dwemer bowls (no too many, not too much stuff in them)

A big question: why did they put those anoying physic-mayhem enabling
hooks, forks, knives, and napekins that are GLUED on some furniture like dinner tables and bed tables
and similarly they put FIXED skulls in my shelves that has an habit of throwing out
anything I place next to thoses

The first thing they should have done is not put that junk there !!!

The second thing ... Morrowind had all sorts of nice napekin, forks, knives, and decorative object
It was a pleasure to place them

At least, Vyndrell Hall is sort of working
I use the rest as museums

But Vyndrell Hall got a downside
Eventually you do a quest where you kill a bunch of merchants (not much choice there, unless you are a psycho)
and Markath already shine with it s lack of merchants and complicated layout (compared to riften)

I was also appaled that cooking doesnt scale up at all. eventually your alchemy is so strong
that cooking become utterly useless

I stored tons of food suplies, half expecting to find secret recipes like potage le magnifique
but no, the gourmet is just a murder target for the dark brotherhood (which I dont like)
sort of ruins part of the house functionality

Vyndrell Hall could have been a lot larger, if it was connected to ruins
but as it stand its more of a hobbit hole

In my previous game I purchased the house in Riften, closer to the Thieves Guild. This house was not worth the money I paid. Plus all the glitches I encountered was annoying.

The house in Windhelm is nice, but the problem is there is hardly any storage, especially in the Alchemy and Enchanting Room. I really wish that the so called "secret cabinet" was removed and a door way put in its place. A chest in this room, the trophy room and the upstairs bedroom and it would be perfect.

Markarth is probably the nicest out of the homes, lots of storage but I am not a fan of the city. Breezehome would be perfect if only it had an enchanting table.

Worst home IMO is Solitude and considering what you paid for it, you would think it would be amazing but its turns out to be a disappointment. And not to mentioned I have to pay to get this house to get that darn gem :/
Hjerim has more storage than Vlindrel Hall. None of them has it in the enchanting/ alchemy areas.

There is an empty room in Markath's house. With spiderwebs and firewood all around. Any purpose with it?

When you become Thane of the Reach, this will be your housecarl's bedroom.

I love the markarth house, much storage, looks amazing, and many rooms. Funny glitch though, when I first entered, my manequin was ALIVE. It looked around and acted like a normal person, but when I interacted with it, it froze and turned back to normal. Same thing happened if I reloaded.

Bioshock made me terrified of statues, and Dr. Who only reinforced this phobia. Reading this sent an insane chill down my spine, and I don't think I'll be getting the Markarth house ever again despite the fact that I liked it the most...

I didn't play Bioshock, but... I used to think those angel statues in graveyards were really cool, now I just think "OMG get me outta here!"

I always get the Markarth house first, and I haven't seen this glitch. I'll be looking for it, though. :ermm:

The best house I ever had was in MW. I just killed the owner and moved in. No storage problems, had all my alchemy equipment spread out on a big dining room table and some of my rarest ingredients, all my potions and poisons lined up on shelves perfectly... *sigh* No muss, no fuss. Just one little murder was all it took.

There would be lot less agony on these forums if it were that easy again. Yeah, have the option to buy a house like a legitimate citizen, but make storage everywhere safe so that we could choose any place we wanted.

Personally, I want the Bard's College.

In Bioshock, pretty much all of the enemies can be heard from a mile away with their psychobabble. That's what makes them terrifying. There's a level though where you can unwittingly unleash a bunch of statues on you...you go through the entire level, and then upgrading at a certain area will trigger every statue you've seen in the level to come to life and leave it's post. They'll then attack you for the rest of the time you're in the area...and unlike all of the other enemies, they make no sound when approaching.

I was at Six Flags Great Adventure a year or so ago where I saw a woman dressed up as a statue. I'm a 21 year old male, and I broke down crying in a panic: That's how absolutely terrified of statues that Bioshock and Dr. Who have made me. I can't go anywhere near them. So I'm going to be avoiding the Markarth house like the plague

I have a vampire character where I wish I could do that, and it aggravates me that I can't. I wanted to kill the owner of one of the farms outside of Whiterun just to be able to use the bed, but I wasn't able to. It aggravated me to no extent and wish they had chosen another way to go about doing that

The Riften house (Honeyside) has an "outside the town" entrance. And getting it is pretty darn easy. Like 8k gold and 3 "do the locals a favor" quests.

I really like the location of the Breezehome, but mine is bugged. I can't use the weapon rack, bookshelves, or weapon displays.:(

I love my Markarth house. There is a satchel really close to the alchemy station, but I wish there was a little more storage in that room (storage in the Enchanting room would be nice, too). The location of the Markarth houes doesn't annoy me, too much. I fast travel to Underkeep and just run over to my house. But I wish it were convenient to the smithy, smelter, and an alchemist.

I've been trying to get the Windhelm house, but I'm finally giving up on that since I don't want to join a faction.

You guys with issues about racks, bookshelves and all: it turns out all this stuff works only if you purchase and completely decorate before setting foot in the house. (correct me if I'm wrong, but it works for me)

I have a sneaking suspicion that a future DLC will have the kind of house (like the Big Empty 'Sink' in F:NV) we're all clamoring for; I want storage by the crafting devices and an in-home forge.

All in all, Breezehome is my favorite for location, crafting (except Enchanting... I'm wearing a path to the Jarl's place) and all the nearby merchants, creepy Lydia aside. I just discovered yesterday, after hours upon hours of play, that the Drunken Huntsman was a shop (Duhhh...), so now it's better than ever.

It's probably for your housecarl, something I can't get on my current character and need to make a new toon because of a bug.

I have the same issue with Honeyside, in Riften. Because of a bug, Iona, the housecarl, doesn't show up.

I agree that there is some aspect that is missing on all the houses (that I have bought or read about).

I like Honeyside, except for the lack of convenient storage and no smelter in town.

I may have to move all my junk back to Breezehome once I get the enchanting table mod.
