How bad is Windows 8?

Post » Thu Apr 18, 2013 8:23 pm

Just got a new gaming PC yesterday that came with Windows 8 but haven't tried any games on it yet. I've been hearing bad things about how most games have compatibility issues with Windows 8 like Fallout 3 and basically any game that was released before W8 came out. Is this true? I'm kind of worried.

One of my friends has W8 and he said it's not very friendly towards older games.

I think the issue for Fallout 3 on Windows 8 is that you need Games for Windows Live which is [censored] but I think it varies for people. Other then that Windows 8has been running fine for me.

Not true. Pretty much any game that works on XP/Vista/7 also works on 8. Well, with the exception of some mid-90s games if you run 64-bit Windows.

The only bad thing with Windows 8 is the Metro UI, which doesn't really break the game compability in any way.

When it comes to compatibility, Windows 8 is the same as windows 7, the one possible thing is that UAC cannot be fully disabled, which can cause issues if still doing bad practices of editing files in protected directories yourself (not a problem if an application edits them)

The point of contention about Windows 8 is the new UI. It is very polarizing and Many hate it.

Windows 8 is so bad that I cannot live with it any longer. Goodbye cruel world.....

Seriously it's basically Windows 7 with a tablet like interface.

My dad has Windows 8 on his laptop and it's a real hit or miss. He's even talking around to computer places on getting WIn 8 removed and install Win 7. In all honestly Win 8 is ONLY good for tablits, mobile smart phones or any computer like devices that have a touch screen...regular keyboard and mouse or even those laptop touch pads don't seem to agree with Win 8 very well.

As people have said, the UI is the real reason that people hate Windows 8. It was developed to be more compatible with tablet devices which is why they designed it as they did.

That said, it's easy enough to use Windows 8 and change the UI to one which more resembles Windows 7.

The only thing that really drives me nuts is the mandatory replacement of the Start Menu with the new "Metro" start page and the convoluted Control Panel/settings UI. If they'd just give the option to use the "classic" Start Menu and Control Panel I'd be ok with it.

I was just about to ask about that..so now they gonna force their UIs down peoples throats.

For win7, I use the Windows classic theme.

I don't like it personally, but other in my family like it. It's not that it's a terrible OS, it's just the Metro UI is terrible for me to use. I use Windows 7 most of the time so there really would be no point for me to upgrade. My gamer friend has Windows 8 and he has no issue installing any games on it whatsoever.

There are fairly significant performance improvements. All the bad aspects of it can be ignored or changed (all of them are UI-related).

I wouldn't mind the mandatory-ness if it was consistent. Some things are only accessible in the Metro settings, others only in the desktop settings, including ones that should be in both. Worse are the inconsistencies with the charms, copy and paste, and other aspects.

Windows 8 as a whole I think can be summed up well with the word "inconsistent" IMO.

Eh? All improvements I've seen have been marginal at best, and it has performed worse in other categories.

Windows 8 makes a lot of minor improvements that improve the experience of using Microsoft's OS. The UI svcks, yes, but there are free fixes out there that you just need to download and install to reinstate the Start menu. I'd get it just for the extra speed and usability. (Note that I'm in the minority on this. Last time I mentioned I liked Windows 8 people piled on me. It was fun while it lasted.)

It sounds horrid and useless compared to Windows 7. If rumors are true they are going to try and backtrack on a lot of the features because they realize how much people hate Windows 8. Chief among them the touch screen interface.

The only issue with it is really the UI, and it's pretty easy to get used to. I actually like it quite a lot.

Alright guys finally using it. It's actually not that bad so far, start menu is weird but it's still not that much better or worse than Windows Vista I was using before.

My main problem with it was the UI. I no longer have issues with it, but I prefer having the good old Start menu instead. Besides that, there isn't much of a difference between Windows 7 and 8.

I actually much prefer just right clicking in the corner where the Start icon used to be. All I need is there already with Windows 8.

Windows 8 murdered my pregnant wife then burned down a poor Slovenian orphanage.
