Well, word around the campfire is that there is an achievement for "discovering 30 locations", not sure if it's legit, but that might be something to go by if it is.
however big they want to make it. they may do what theyre doing with gta 5 and expand it from its origional size. or they may make it smaller, who knows. i'm assuming the first answer.

It is. I don't spread lies . http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1421192-18-updatedragonborn-dlc-discussion-thread-43/page__view__findpost__p__21749310
Solstheim will be approx 1/3rd the size of Skyrim if you're basing it on that metric.

Going by that, it's about a third the size of Skyrim, which I think is pretty good for a $20 DLC.
they don't really need to make it exactly like the map or Bloodmoon...It's their game, it's their lore, we are only humble gamers waiting to see how awesome it will be.
Under the criteria you suggested, it'll be quite big. Maybe "hold size" and a little bit on top. We can only speculate though based on the trailer and the previous expansion (Bloodmoon) that took place there etc. There's Dunmer architecture though.

Yeah, and I'm hoping it's a pretty large, "meaty" sized place. I don't think it's going to be the size of a hold, but rather a fairly large area with lots of new things to do.

Does anyone not hope that? But, I agree. With all that.
Lol SCREW BIG MAPS I WANT SMALL SOLSTHEIM TO RIDE AROUND ON WHILE I WATCH MY LITTLE PONY!!! yeah right.

Well, we'll see what Bethesda wants with the DLC in the coming weeks. Seeing DG's areas often times referred to as slightly empty and underwhelming doesn't help. I do hope Dragonborn emphasizes more on prominent aspects such as exploration and questing; the things that make TES memorable.
I'm just hoping this is a place my Dunmer will feel at home. Windhelm was is the closes thing in Skyrim, but it was poorly done. (No Dunmer Culture, Armor, Clothing, Quests, ect) Had one quest and some banners with Windhelm being a major stopping point for the Dunmer after the Red Year you think there'd be more to it.
It might be somewhat the size of Shivering Isles, might just be bigger than most DLC for most games are. This is content wise, not landmass. The island wasn't even that big in Morrowind. It was really tiny there. It won't be huge.

That would be awesome I love exploring a finding different locations.
