How can I ever take Skyrim shields seriously again....

Post » Sun Aug 19, 2012 11:28 pm

You insulted me first when you asked "what's the point" of a post where I made the point very clear. Were you never taught enough manners to know that "what's the point" isn't exactly considered "nice" decorum?

I find it absolutely amazing that I come here to write a post about how I just watched a video showing real shields from history and how they stand in diametric opposition to most of the shields in Skyrim, I ask for other peoples' opinions and aside from a couple nice replies, I get this steady influx of claptrap by people without a shred of curiosity or interest in anything, and zero tolerance for anyone who dares to criticized their beloved game. The irony being that I've probably played this beloved game series long before they have.

You were insulted by my first post? Me'thinks you need to grow a thicker skin.

You find it amazing that you asked for opinions on the internet and were insulted by the replies? Well, sometimes, when you go fishing, you catch a boot.

I called two people stupid because (a) one offered the typical "it's a fantasy game" reply even though I took great pains to explain why that doesn't cut it for me, and (B) because a guy asked what my point is. How do you like it when you post a question or a comment, make your intentions very clear and then are asked "what's the point?"

(a) it is a fantasy game therefore the laws of physics and workings of our world don't necessarily apply in the fantasy setting.

(B ) honestly I really don't care I just re explain the point an a clear and concise manner. I don't take offense at silly things like that.

Tbh you called me stupid, and I basicly wrote 80% the same thing as you did, I just disagreed with shield part. And I didn't even say that to you. So I think people tell you right when they say;
Your too sensetive, quit whining.

Sorry mate, your point is valid, but your approach is wrong.

Of course I was! "Was there a point, otherwise, to this thread." You went out of your way to be a jerk and I picked up on it.

As for my asking for opinions, I notice not too many people actually gave their opinions on the topic itself. May I bring it full circle?

>>>How do you folks "role play" the existence not only of the shields in Skyrim but also the other gear that if placed in the possession of a real soldier would either weigh him down, be lopsided and unwieldy, be off balance or just get him killed? <<<

Why bother replying to this thread if you don't want to comment on the topic at hand?

Ya but I didn't really want to write an essay explaining it to him so I figured I'd just go with that and watch the resulting disaster lol.

Disaster? LOL there's no disaster here. We're all having a friendly conversation about how we individually deal with the lack of realism in Skyrim gear.

We commented and you completely overreacted, plus the original point is silly because IT'S A GAME THAT IS NOT MEANT TO BE REALISTIC.

No I just assumed you would be offended by that and would write a paragraph trying to explain how I'm stupid.

You call telling people they're stupid friendly??? Um ok

I'm sorry I called you stupid and the other fellow too. I felt the other fellow was rude, but not necessarily stupid.

As for you, you simply struck a nerve with the old "it's a fantasy game and anything can happen" argument. I apologize for my reaction. But in fairness I did explain why that excuse doesn't really cut it in my original post. You disagreed, fine.

How? Really? The same way I can roleplay someone that can cary 400 pounds of "fat lute" and not be weighed down. The SAME way I can roleplay that my character is a humanoid feline. The SAME way that I can roleplay that my glass armor is NOT made of glass, or that Ebony armor is NOT made of wood.

>>>And yes, yes, I'm well aware that in a world populated by elves and cat people who shoot fireballs, one has to temper his expectations of realism. But to me, if it's in the lore, it's "realistic" for the purposes of the game. Last I checked, the official lore never said anything about the citizens of Tamriel having freakishly strong shield arms able to whip a massive metal Dwemer shield around all day long.<<<

You made your entire point null and void by stating that because you acknowledged that the game is not realistic by any means.

INTERESTING! Thank you, my friend. Now we're getting somewhere.

Yes there are a ton of unrealistic things in this game and we can't roleplay them all away. We can mod some of them away if we play on PC (I can only carry 120 units of weight and I only gain 2 per more per stamina point, not 5).

But HOW is my question? HOW do you roleplay so much of the gear away? You said you do, but not how.

I'm not an expert on this topic, nor have I clicked any of the links. But I think I have to agree - I drastically lowered stamina regeneration and upped stamina drain for various tasks, especially shield bash. I also wished to have my stamina draining when just raising the shield (wasnt it like that in Oblivion?) but couldn't get it to work...

Not really. Plenty of the game is realistic. Plenty of the lore is even realistic. In other words I can accept that an elf exists, but I have a harder time accepting or understanding how that very elf can whip around a massive Dwemer shield all day.

Um we just play the game? It's not real clear what we are asking. Are you asking how we can stand to play with so much gear or just how we RP with certain gear
