hi i am relatively new to using the construction kit for skyrim, and was wondering how tough would it be to create an exterior cell player home ? i have some ideas for what i am after doing with a player home in the main tamriel worldspace.
any advice or tips on how to do this would be great. =)

Hello Philzx
Here is a link to all the tutorials you'll need for this. It's not difficult, just time consuming but if you like to build stuff as I do, then you'll like this.

Somewhere in the pages are some really good links to video tutorials. The cell is created by itself, and linked to the outside by a door. The outside building is just an object. It marks the spot. You don't actually go into it.

Have fun!

Not sure that's possible apart from a tiny wooden shack.

That could be very tough, particularly if you have less than a lot of experience.

Usually, house objects that are placed in the exterior world are merely the outer shell of a building with nothing useful inside. When you enter the house, you are transported into another cell, where the outer walls that you see from the inside are a totally different object, quite distinct from the dummy you saw in the exterior world.

To create a home without placing its interior in a separate cell, you would need a house object/mesh, that would combine both the internal end external structures, and those do not exist in the game apart from some small shacks or guard towers or such.

Potentially, one could think of positioning an exterior structure over an interior structure, but it is extremely unlikely, that they would align properly, as they have not been intended to be used that way. The exterior might easily have stuff going through it on the inside, that would totally destroy any possibility of using its interior for anything.

Essentially, you would most likely have to start from modeling to create you own custom house object/mesh, and that would require experience and a lot of time, probably more than most people would be willing to spend on such a venture.

If you are flexible in terms of what the house might look like, one practical approach might be to go through the available selection of guard towers and other similar open-air structures with an open mind, and see if you might be tempted to adapt one of those as a house. Perhaps something along the lines of letting your inner interior decorator loose on Valtheim Towers. Another practical approach could be to "camouflage" an interior-cell based home by surrounding it tightly with a number of open air structures.

and then there is the matter of weather and lighting. your house interior will be treated as exterior so it will not shield the player from rain, snow etc (it will just rain and snow inside your house)

You could use some parts and creat a type of lean-to with a roof. A full inside could be done using a lot of parts but as Amethyst said, it would be treated as an outside place.
