Similar to what Bran said. I'm pretty sure Todd Howard of the team are not happy. If I'm not mistaken, they made it abudently clear that wanted nothing to do with a Elder Scrolls mmo.
Me? I'm utteraly mortafied. This could single handedly destroy one of the greatest game series of all time. A seriers that counts game of the year awards, Rpg of the year awards, and PC game of the years awards, all by the dozens if not hundreds.
A game seriers that went from "average" with ES Arena and ES Daggerfall, to completely revolutionizing rpg gaming AND graphical beauty with morrowind.
The Elder Scrolls is about going out and exploring vast, hand crafted universes and beautiful scenaries. A universe where nearly every NPC had their own story. And their own unique quests or jobs that actually meant something in that part of the world. A universe that the Player could mold through his or her own actions and reap both the benfits of such descisions and consequences. And these descicions would affect both the player and the world around him.
You cannot capture the Elderscrolls in a mmo. A mmo is meant for masses of people that want to grind and win gear nd have fun with pals. And that can be awesome, perhaps just as cool as the ES. But that isn't what the Elderscrolls is about.
You can't keep the feel of vast wonders and quests in a mmo. You can't feel like the hero who saved the entire land from the invasion of Mahrunes Dagon when there are 50,000 other hero of kvatch's. You can't feel like the Dragon slayer of old tales, when there are 100,000 others just like you, many with far more dragon kills and shout then you. How can you?
The Elderscrolls is a rpg. Not an mmo. And no matter how good the game is, it still won't do the series any justice, because it won't be the Elderscrolls. It will be a good rpg game that uses the Elder scrolls name as a title.
And if this game really is going to be poorly made, I can only hope for a quick blowout and a silent death to he mmo so that the rest of the actual series can remain unscarred incase this game will... well svck. But this is ofcourse only the case if the game does svck. which I hope it doesn't, but I certainly don't approve as of now.
And considering a vast majority of the elder scrolls fanbase are almost universally against this move, I wonder how the makers actually feel. They may not care about our opinion (or perhaps they really do), but early evidence of negativety certaintly does not make for a good outlook for future sales.
