I hear you do see him in third person at the end (haven't gotten there yet).
For a very bare-bones first-person PC, he's so awesome. I like the fact that he is not über-godly. Even with his standing prior to game time and his supernatural powers, I feel like he's still an average man and being manipulated even by those who are helping him. Yet he does have agency on the world. I see it symbolized in his hands, which are powerful but not as large as some of the others.
It's a really hard balance to achieve and Arkane did it beautifully. Having a good, effective PC is not something you see people mention often about the game, but is one of the things that first drew me to the game and helps to connect to the world.
