So how does DLC (Dawnguard) work exactly?

Post » Thu Nov 15, 2012 10:54 am

I know it isn't out yet, but how have DLC expansions worked in the past? This will be my first DLC purchase for an Elder Scrolls game, so I am completely unfamiliar. After downloading the DLC and then loading your previous save character, does some NPC come running up to you with news and start telling you about this Dawnguard faction? If not, how long does it wait or how is it triggered? I'm just curious what to expect.

Spoiler
You hear about it from guards or innkeepers, supposedly.

It depends. In Oblivion, the KotN was started when people were yelling about the attack on the chappel in Anvil. For Shivering Isles you got a message saying a strange doorway had opened in the Niben Bay.

All of Fo3's were either message or radio signals.

My guess would be a courier of some kind, or message pop up. Unless they've finally learned and stop shoving in your face, taking a more descrete approach. (like gossip)

Please do not spoil how you start the quest for those of us who don't want to know. Use spoiler tags or take it to the spoiler section of the forum.

OP, I gather you are asking about how the DLC will work and whether there is some kind of pop up message. My understanding is the DLC content is seamlessly integrated, so you just start up a new character (or load existing save) and play though the game until you encounter the new content naturally.

if you want to discuss specifically how to start it the Dawnguard main quest, please make a thread in the spoiler section of the forum.

Yep, Todd mentioned specifically in an interview, there is no "Congratulations, you just bought Dawnguard!" pop up - it's integrated in a way where you just go through a normal playthrough.

That'll work then. Should be pretty cool. I guess I now have to decide if i want to be a vamp or vamp destroyer. I'm leaning toward destroyer, but we'll see.

Sorry, thought that was universally known. I mean, Todd did say it in an interview, IIRC.

No I wasn't wanting or expecting specific details of Dawnguard as I thought anyone who actually knew at this point would be bound by NDA. I was just curious how subtle I should expect it to be based on past DLC. Your answer was what I was after.

Spoiler
In Dawnguard once you're around level 10 you will hear about it from guards or innkeepers (if you are over 10 by loading a previous save just talk to an innkeeper and ask about rumors or just walk by some guards) and from there you follow the quest marker.

This isn't a spoiler this is just general information but i decided to put it in a spoiler for those that would like to find it themselves.

I hope it is via courier or inn keepers but I have no idea.

Maybe a vampire attack on a city? I hope it's either very flashy or very subtle. Can't make up my mind on it

Well in F3 and Oblivion DLC integration wasn't exactly seamless since for the vast majority you'd get a pop up message and a quest start.

Hopefully it isn't like that but you never know.

A dawnguard member walks up and tells you if you want to join the dawnguard.
