Just take your cues from the site admins and the other moderators. Also, get used to being hated, even if you're a cute fluffy bunny that just wants to be hugged. Think of yourself as an administrator - i.e. less of a warden, more of a filing clerk. It's mostly like being a parent: 99% of it is running around tidying up after people and the other 1% is saying, "No, we don't pull hair. Let go. Let go. Let go ..."
You've clearly been moderating the wrong forums then. There are definitely some rough websites out there with a wild west mentality. I used to be active on one myself, had to get the job done myself. If not for their users being able to file complaints I think that place would have died off long ago. I was something of a hated bounty hunter myself. Though it has been ages since I've been active there, a good and bad thing. People will forget who I am.

Don't do anything too extreme.
This includes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5N9t5qOSzCU and gargling razorblades

You've got to know when to hold them, know when to fold them, know when to walk away, know when to run...
Just don't quote Kenny Rogers though :ermm: [as you can see, Rumbly still isn't the same...]

I would, but you have a small baby, so you probably smell of poo -I know I did for the first three years....

graciously accept this rain check for once potty-training is finalized

Oh, now all of a sudden she's an expert at parenting...

So how does it equate to when you find your child playing doctor with three girls in the bushes, and you realize your kid is getting more action than you are?

Your basically hand of the king now, good luck.
Now go and wipe the king's...

-hang on.. didn't I just cover that with the poo smelling business?

relax, be cool, you'll be fine. You're a good kid, EF

Decide what word each day you will ban people for. Say today is "pickle" day. Ban anyone on the forum that uses the word "pickle". Then tomorrow the word can be "awesome". I think you can get rid of a lot of people on "awesome" day. Today I picked "moderator" as the word I'm banning folks for using.

See, just do things to entertain yourself and to ensure you reach your ban quota for the day and to keep 'em guessing.

I dont know what sort of thing your moderating, but from my experience moderating, expect weird, strange, sick, really sick, sad, things happening, if you dont get any of those things you'll be lucky. Also annoying people, and threats, those i loved the most, and abuse thats always fun as well, and dont make exceptions to the rules, the rules are there for a reason, and when you need to give someone a kicking just do it. I know Mods who think its fun just to ban people, they get to be the ruler of their own little kingdom and get joy out of harrasing users, dont do that.

I knew you couldn't have used a knife for peanut butter!

I do use spoon myself for jam/jelly. I don't see how anyone would be capable of getting anything out with a knife.

Most of the advice given has been good. Most importantly, keep your cool and try to diffuse things rather than getting riled up. Don't be afraid of bringing another moderator or administrator in if you need to, and make full use of the secret mod board if the site has one.

Honestly, the best mods I've seen were here. Of course I only go to two different forums, but the other's mods lets flame wars go on just long enough to bring a week long ban on everyone involved. So, maybe try acting like these mods.

I use a knife to get peanut butter out as well.

This should be worth a permanent ban. :verymad: No knives, please! :cryvaultboy:

Also, leaving crumbs in the butter/margarine.

I don't see why you have to hide now man! EF has multitudes of threads closed down because they're just spam or really useless questions. How can he be made moderator? That forum must be in shambles. There's nothing wrong with saying this. I'm half expecting EF to say "just messing with you guys" when he logs back on.

One thing is, stick to the forum rules and general courtesy in PM's. 'Mod' and 'god' are still one letter away from each other.

Yeah, courtesy is important. Most mods I've encountered on most forums remember this, but there are a few who consider courtesy to be optional, especially when it's out of public view (one of whom actually said as much to me not so long ago) which makes them quite hard to respect.

That's crazy, you'd have to be some sort of sociopath to say that.
